Hello everyone, in our Lesson 6, we learnt about the prefix anaAna represents the meanings up; back; again; anew. Today we shall see the prefix ante. Happy Reading :)

Day 7 : Ante

  • ante - before; preceding
Let's try to understand this with some examples....
  1. antedate (verb) = to be built or formed or to happen, at an earlier date than something else in the past.
    • ante - Prefix = before
    • date - Root = date
  2. antenatal (adjective) = relating to the medical care given to the pregnant woman
    • ante - Prefix = before
    • nat (nasci) - R = to be born
    • al - Suffix = connected to
Let's have a look at some more words with ante prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. antepast = a foretaste [something that gives you an idea of what something else is like by allowing you to experience a small example of it before it happens]
  2. anterior = preceding in time or place
  3. antemeridiem = coming before noon
  4. antediluvian =  belonging to the time before the biblical Flood (extremely old-fashioned)
  5. anteversion = a tipping forward of an organ
  6. anteroom = a waiting room, before a larger, more important room
  7. antecedent = someone or something existing or happening before, especially as the origin of something / someone
Home Work :

Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
  1. extra-
  2. hetero-
  3. inter-
  4. macro-
a. large
b. outside
c. other
d. between
