Hello everyone, in our Lesson 5, we learnt about the prefixes ambi, amphiAmbi represent the meaning both of two and Amphi represent the meanings both, about, around. Today we shall see the prefix ana. Happy Reading :)

Day 6 : Ana

  • ana - up; back; again; anew
Note : anew means in a new or different way

Let's try to understand this with some examples....
  1. analysis (noun) = the detailed study of something
    1. ana - Prefix = up
    2. lysis (luein) - Root = loosen
  2. anatomy (noun) = the scientific study of structure of that human or animal bodies
    1. ana - Prefix = up
    2. tomy (temnein) - Suffix = to cut
Let's have a look at some more words with ana prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. analogy = a resemblance between two situations
  2. analyst = someone whose job is to study or examine something detail
  3. anaphora = the use of a word replaces another word, earlier used in a sentence
  4. anagram =  a word or phrase made by using the letters of another word or phrase in a different order
  5. analytic = examining  things very carefully
  6. analogue = something that is similar to or can be used instead of something else
  7. anachronism = something (person, thing, or idea) that exists out of its time in history, especially one that happened or existed later than the period being shown, discussed, etc
Home Work :

Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
  1. apo-
  2. ex-
  3. arch-
  4. homo-
a. out of
b. away
c. chief
d. same

Try to match the above elements with given meanings.  Solve it on your own and
