Hello everyone, in our Lesson 4, we learnt about the prefixes al, all.  They represent the meanings all, completely. Today we shall see the prefixes ambi, amphi. Happy Reading :)

Day 5 : Ambi, Amphi

  • ambi - both of two
  • ambhi - both; about; around 
Let's try to understand these with some examples....
  1. ambivert (noun) = a person whose nature combine those of the introvert and extrovert.
    • ambi - Prefix = both of two
    • vert (vertere) - Root =  to turn
  2. amphibian (noun) = any animal that can live both on land and in water.
    • amphi - Prefix = both
    • bi (bios) - Root = life
    • an - Suffix = typical of 
Let's have a look at some more words with ambi, amphi prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. ambivalent = having or showing both good and bad feelings about somebody / something 
  2. amphibious = capable of living on both land and water
  3. ambient = immediate surroundings of something
  4. ambiguous =  having or expressing more than one possible meaning
  5. amphitheatre = a circular area of ground around which rows of seats are arranged on a steep slope, for watching plays, sports, etc. outside
Home Work :

Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.
  1. ab-, abs-
  2. ana-
  3. dys-
  4. eu-
a. away
b. well
c. bad
d. up, back
