Topic 1 : "Giving cities the smart edge"

  • Civic - relating to a city or town
  • Urbanisation - the ​process by which more and more ​people ​leave rural areas to ​live in ​cities
  • Overwhelmed - ​to cover something ​suddenly and ​completely
  • Rendering - the way that something is ​performed
  • Incapable - unable to do something
  • Sewerage - waste and used water that is carried away from buildings through pipes
  • Pedestrian - a ​person who is ​walking
  • Wilfully - intentionally (doing something ​bad)
  • Violated -  to ​break or ​act against something (​law, ​agreement, ​principle etc)
  • Severe - very great
  • Congestion - too ​crowded and ​causing difficulties
  • Incentivising - to encourage someone to do something
  • Come up with something - to ​suggest an ​idea or ​plan
  • Sustainable - able to ​continue over a ​period of ​time
  • Adoption - accepting or ​starting to use something new
  • Measurable - noticeable
  • Virtually - almost (nearly)
  • Disaggregated - to separate something into parts
  • Imperative - crucial
  • Mobility - the ability to move between different levels in society
  • Emphasis - special importance / value given to something
  • Walkability - a measure of how friendly an area is to walking
  • Ambition - a strong desire to do something
  • Opting - chosing
  • Unattainable - not ​able to be ​achieved
  • Merely - only
  • Aided by - helped or supported by
  • Potential - the capacity to develop into something in the future
  • For instance - for example
  • Impact - influence
  • Gated communities - a ​group of ​houses, ​surrounded by ​fences or ​walls, that can only be ​entered by the ​people who ​live there
  • Landscape - all the visible features of an area of land
  • Enclave - a place that is different in character from those surrounding it
  • Cater - provide with what is needed or required
  • Convergence - the act of coming closer

  • Spectrum - range of radio waves
  • Public asset - something ​valuable ​belonging to the government
  • End up - to ​finally be in a ​particular ​place or ​situation
  • Scarce - insufficient
  • Rendered - caused to be / became
  • Vanguard - to be in leading position to develop something
  • To spur - to ​encourage an ​activity or ​development or make it ​happen ​faster
  • Opted - to make a choice
  • Missive - official letter
  • Spelt out - to explain something very clearly
  • Rationale - ​reasons
  • Likelihood - the ​chance that something will ​happen
  • Germane - relevant and appropriate
  • Possibly - perhaps (used to indicate doubt)
  • Viability - ​capable of success
  • Posited - put in position (placed)
  • Recurring - occur again repeatedly
  • Underscore - to show the importance of something
  • Partly - not completely
  • Decline - decrease
  • Amortisation - spreading payments over multiple periods
  • Contention - disagreement
  • Task at hand - assigned work
  • Transparency - the ​quality of doing something in an ​open way without ​secrets
  • Openness - honesty
  • Quest - search for something
  • Plumping - to became heavier
  • Operationalised - put into operation or use
  • Intervening - happening between two ​times or between other ​events
