In a computer, the files are to be opened, saved, renamed deleted and closed. Similarly the required files are to be opened. The programs are to be loaded into memory. The hard disk, CPU and other devices are to be managed. The printer has to be directed to print copies. All these tasks have been set up by the Operating System as per the commands of user.

In the initial days of computer, there was no Operating System. So the work has to be decided manually by the computer operator (programmer). The computers operate the program which has been written only in the Machine Language. The programmer has to look after every event of the program (from Start to End).
After some time, the programming languages have been designed. The development of computers lead to the development of many input devices, functions, input / output devices. Compilers are also developed for easy coding of programs. All these led to the development of an Operating System.

In simple language, "a System which helps the computer to Operate is called Operating System" or "a collection of programs necessary to run the computer is called Operating System". The operating system supervises execution of the works according to the instructions given by the users. It provides an interface between the user and the machine. It executes the application programs through managing its resources efficiently.
Examples of popular modern operating systems include Android, BSD, iOS, DoS, Linux, OS X, QNX, Microsoft Windows and IBM z/OS. All these examples, except Windows and z/OS, share roots in UNIX.
That's all for now friends. In our next post we shall discuss about the Functions and Types of Operating System. Happy Reading :)
