I entered the room and wished the panel. They asked me to sit. I thanked them.
M-1 (Senior-most): Your training looks completely irrelevant to your field.
I was surprised.
Me: Sir, do you want to say that it is irrelevant to banking?
M-1: No. To your B.Tech degree.
(What the hell. I have done B.Tech in Mechanical Engg. Training in automobile sector is irrelevant?)
Me: Explained a bit.
M-2: What is Bohr's Theory?
(For 2 3 seconds I was surprised. Whether I have heard this or not. Then suddenly it clicked. Yes in Chemistry. But why is he asking chemistry? Again surprised.)
Me: Sorry sir.
M-2: Einstein's Theory?
(Again? I was thinking come on sir. Ask me something from mechanical or banking.)
Me: Explained Theory of relativity.
M-1 again: What have you read in banking?
Me: Sir rates like repo, rev repo, CBS..(interrrupted in between)
M-1: You are not supposed to know that. Tell us about the Negotiable Instrument Act.
(Wow! I am not supposed to know about basic banking. But they suppose me to know about the Acts?)
Me: Explained Negotiable Instruments and this act is needed to give them a legal entity.
M-1: In which section of which act is bouncing of a cheque a punishable offence?
(Oh God. Ask me something basic.)
Me: Sorry sir.
M-3: What is TDS?
(Please let me go out of here.)
Me: Sorry sir.
M-4: What do you know about sportsman spirit?
(At last something that I can try to answer.)
Me: Explained. Related it to patience and then related that quality to banking to extend my answer a bit.
M-5: If an old woman comes to you. There is a long queue. What will you do?
Me: Sir I would ask her to sit for a while. After 4-5 customers I will take her query.
M-5: But the people standing in the queue are protesting.
Me: All are human. They will not.
Then they said you can leave.
Completely unexpected questions. Not a single question was asked that I have prepared.

ReplyDeleteAs per the best of my knowledge, interview has only 20% weight whereas 80% weight is of written/online exam. So, if one has scored sufficient in the latter, I don't think Interview impacts that much. Only minimum passing marks will do.

ReplyDeletemost interviews are meant to test one's ability to tackle a particular situation rather than one's knowledge. In that case the interviewer can try anything to bring the candidate out of his/her comfort zone. If you were able to keep your cool you have a good chance. All the best.

ReplyDeleteya its tough; but one thing I must tell u an interview does not have any fixed syllabus & don't expect common questions to answer... It depends completely on luck(in terms of your preparation) & how you face them by thinking out of the box....

ReplyDeleteInterview is test of personality and test of knowledge may be a small component of it.
Needless to say, they have checked your knowledge in the written/online exam.
Everyone can't know everything and this fact is kept under consideration while taking interview yet they expect at basic banking related stuff at least.
Anyway, hope for the best.

Oh gosshhhh...even i hv got somewhat similar experience as yours.....they asked me about the technology that the banks work ..atm is connected to bank in which manner.....i said branch network and dxplained about how tge information is transferred between computers how atm works but they were not satisfied...next they asked wht is written now a days on atms...i din get their point i said atm is also a computer but they qere nt satisfied...they repeatedly kept asking wht is written on the atms...at last the one who asked tht question said fully computerised is written on the atms ....means wht is this yaar ....i was explains ng the same thing but.....next he askex which devices are used forfinancial i clusion ....the devices which are used to open accounts by going door to door...again i was unable to satisfy him then he replied handheld devices.......he was denying to my each and every answer...i m an ib.tech. graduate in IT ....it seemed tht the person wS trying to ask about IT but was ignorant of anything about tht....he din ask even a single qn about banking not even current affairs...i m very much dissappointed and shocked....

ReplyDeleteYes the interview has no syllabus bt the interviewer doesn't hav d right to tell dt a specific field students doesn't need to know x,y or z.This interview experience does nothing othr dan scaring us.I am feeling pity for Satyendra actually.

ReplyDeleteso sad to hear this.. :( but again isnt it rude to say ur experience is totally irrelevant???. If they are doing this to a btech graduate. what they are gonna tell me being a MA in english literature. they might say: "you are a waste of time. right? OMG I am tensed now.
ReplyDeleteI have also heard that large no. of staff going to retire this year, and this pmjdy you mentioned. So there are good chances of vacancies increment. In that case ratio will be even better than 1:2 .

ReplyDeleteHey, I also gave my interview on 27th and looking at the title "weirdest Interview". I had to click on this ..because mine was the same. They asked me engineering questions. I don't understand if they want a person for banking job then why to ask these kind of questions.
ReplyDeleteUnlike you, I straightforwardly told them that I am not in contact with the engineering stuff because I knew that if I will answer one , they'll ask another.I prepared everything related to banking but they didn't ask a single question from there.
And don't worry, they are not GOD. and nobody can tell you where you stand. Its ONLY YOU who know where you stand. You don't need anyone's opinion as u r good for the interview or not.
So Best of luck and hope for the best.. You will get selected :)
Don't worry yr, at least you tried to answer. Perfect answers are rare and so are candidates. Giving absolutely correct answers is not the only part of interview.Many more things count, viz. your attempt and approach to their questions, your body language, way to communicate, your academic records, just to name a few. So, just chillax and keep moving on.

they can ask anything in interview. These are relevant questions asked for banking and for mechanical.. A Mech person is supposed to know bohrs theory and einsteins energy theory or else his degree is a naamkewas. BTw i got even serious questions than those but he has answered good. I think his written scores must not be upto the mark as he is attending somewhat late ... So during interview, people generally test him more on interview thats y they ask questions like these..
