International Affairs
  • France is mobilising 10,000 troops to boost security after last week's deadly attacks, and will send thousands of police to protect Jewish schools.
    • It is the first time troops have been deployed within France on such a scale.

  • The Army school in Peshawar, Pakistan, where more than 140 people, mostly children were killed last month, reopened today.

MoUs
  • 31 Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) were inked in various fields on the inaugural day of the 7th Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit in Gandhinagar yesterday.
    • A major MoU was signed between World Bank, Government of India and the Gujarat Government, according to which the World bank will support Gujarat in the ‘Swachhta Abhiyan’ or cleanliness mission, and build smart cities.
    • Other key MoUs were signed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited for rail systems and Indo-China Development Private Ltd. for a trade centre.
    • In the theme Seminar, ‘Gujarat: preferred hub for defense production’, as many as 11 MoUs were signed.
    • One of the MoUs included Adani Enterprise’s interest to develop integrated solar PV manufacturing cluster and Narmada Bio-chem to produce organic and inorganic fertilizer.

National Affairs
  • Today is National Youth Day.
    • The day is celebrated every year on 12 th of January, the birth anniversary of social reformer, philosopher and thinker Swami Vivekananda.
    • Since 1985 onwards, National Youth Day is being celebrated all over the country.
  • The Election Commission today said the Delhi assembly elections would be held on 7th February in single phase.
    • Counting of votes would take place on 10th February.
    • In November 2014, President Pranab Mukherjee, dissolved the Delhi Assembly, paving the way for fresh elections that will end the political hibernation since the Aam Admi Party (AAP) government led by Arvind Kejriwal fell in February.
    • By elections for Srirangam in Tamil Nadu, Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal will also be held on 7th February.

  • Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said government proposes to come up with an industry friendly policy on defence manufacturing and procurement in 2-3 months, a move aimed at promoting local production and reduce imports. 
  • Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has formally adopted four villages of Karnali group panchayat in Vadodara district in Gujarat as part of the 'Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana' for MPs.
  • The Supreme Court directed the government to ensure that a system is put in place to allow NRIs to e-vote within 8 weeks.
    • The move came after the government made it clear to the apex court that it was willing to accept the recommendations put forth by the Election Commission in this regard.
    • So now, the Non Resident Indians may not have to fly to India to cast their vote during elections.
    • The Election Commission had earlier recommended e-ballot voting for Indian passport holders abroad.
    • The government had given voting rights to the NRIs in 2010, but as per the rule the voter has to be present in their constituency on the day of voting.
  • Centre is planning to sanction sewerage projects worth over 1500 crore rupees to check flow of untreated waters into the ‎Ganga‬ river.

  • Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu said that the project plan for the Centre’s proposed 100 smart cities would be ready by January end and the coming budget would make provisions for a detailed project report (DPR) and provide viability gap funding for interested investors.

  • Golden Globe Awards‬ 2015
    • Richard Linklater film Boyhood has taken top honours at the Golden Globe Awards.
      • The movie, which took 12 years to make, won best film drama, with Linklater named best director and Patricia Arquette best supporting actress.
      • British actor Eddie Redmayne won best actor in a drama for his role as physicist Professor Stephen Hawking in the film titled The Theory of Everything.
      • British actresses Joanne Froggatt and Ruth Wilson also collected prizes.

  • Industrial Production grows to a five month high of 3.8 per cent in November.
  • Microsoft and Idea Cellular have partnered to enable users to purchase application and games from the Windows Store through operator billing.
    • This is expected to simplify mobile phone application purchase by eliminating the need to use credit cards or other electronic payment options for paid content.

Science & Technology
  • Australia today expressed confidence that negotiations on the civil nuclear deal with India will not “drag on” as political clearance has already been given and only technical issues are required to be resolved.
  • The fourth navigation satellite of India is getting ready for launch in March, and it will be another step forward for India in evolving its own navigation satellite system and not depend on the Geographical Positioning System (GPS) service of the U.S.
Deaths
  • Popular Tollywood producer & director VB Rajendra Prasad passed away.
    • Rajendra Prasad’s ‘Antastulu’ has won a national award in 1965. 
    • He received Raghupati Venkaiah Naidu award Life Time Achievement in 2003 and KV Reddy Memorial Award in 2000.  
Sports
  • Anirban Lahiri has been voted the 2014 Players' Player of the Year for his successful exploits on the Asian Tour, where he won two titles and finished second on the Order of Merit. 
  • West Indies completed the highest run chase in Twenty20 history as they beat South Africa by four wickets in a thrilling game in Johannesburg.
    • West Indies 236-6 (19.2 overs) and South Africa 231-7 (20 overs) 
  • Roger Federer records 1000th win in professional circuit after lifting the Brisbane International title.

  10. Bring all originals no photocopy will be accepted..important certificated like your degree,consolidated,id proof,community semester should be in original.
