International Affairs
  • Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Australia for G-20 (from November 14-19), his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott called him this morning to discuss agenda for the multilateral and asked Modi to share, in particular, his vision for accelerating global economic growth and employment generation.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee today embarked on a two-day visit to Bhutan with an aim of further strengthening bilateral ties.
    • India will continue to assist Bhutan in its economic development, he said.
    • It is the first visit by any Indian head of state in 26 years, during which some agreements in education sector are likely to be signed. 
  • The European Union and Japan have brushed aside warnings from North Korea and presented a United Nations resolution calling for a probe of the Pyongyang regime for crimes against humanity.
  • Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is on a three day visit to China to further strengthen bilateral relations.
    • During the visit, the two countries will sign agreements worth billions of dollars investment in Pakistan.
  • The terrorist organization Boko Haram has renamed two towns it captured in northeast Nigeria as part of campaign to establish a caliphate in the region.
    • The Islamists seized the town of Mubi in Adamawa state last week and now insist it be called Madinatul Islam, or "City of Islam" in Arabic.
    • Gwoza in neighbouring Borno state which was captured in July is now being called Darul Hikma or "House of Wisdom".

  • Today (7th November 2014)  is National Cancer Awareness Day.
  • Today is birth anniversary of Great Indian Physicist, Nobel laureate, Bharat Ratna Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (C. V. Raman) and Great freedom fighter Bipin Chandra Pal.
  • The 80th annual meet of Indian Academy of Sciences, which was founded by Nobel laureate Sir C V Raman, began Chennai today. 
  • The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on blackmoney has found that less than half of the HSBC bank list of over 600 accounts did not have any money while more than hundred names were duplicate entires, hampering the possibility of any action against them.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi Adopts Jayapur village under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana during his visit to Varanasi.
    • He favoured "technological upgradation" and "human resource development" in the textile sector so that the youth take to it as a vocation" not out of any compulsion, but with pride".
  • Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is going to tender his resignation tomorrow after BJP parliamentary Board approves his name as a Union Cabinet Minister. 
    • The reshuffle of the Union Cabinet will take place on 9th November 2014 (Sunday).
    • New Ministers will take oath at 1 PM.
  • The Army today took responsibility for the recent killing of two youths by its soldiers in Budgam district and admitted that it was a "mistake" and a violation of rules of engagement.
    • The Army also said that it would complete its inquiry within ten days and take action against the guilty.

  • The Election Commission has asked Home Ministry not to repeat announcements like compensation to riot victims during elections when Model Code of Conduct is in force.
    • The Commission in its order issued to the Home Secretary sought assurance from the government that such instances could not recur in future.
  • National Children Film Festival to be held from November 14 to November 16 this year.
    • The main theme of the festival is 'Swachta'.
    • Sania Mirza will be the chief guest.
    • 'Pappu ki Pugdandi' to be the opening film this year.
  • The missile cluster of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Services will have their hands full in the next few weeks with the flight-tests of Agni-II, Agni-IV, Prithvi-II and Dhanush missiles.
    • The Agni-II, IV and V, Prithvi-II and Dhanush are all surface-to-surface missiles, capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
    • Dhanush is a naval variant of Prithvi and launched from ships.
  • The modified direct cash subsidy transfer for LPG consumers will be launched in 54 districts from November 15 and all over the country from January 1.
    • Under the scheme, LPG consumers will get cash subsidy in their bank accounts so they can buy a cooking gas cylinder at market price.

  • In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' initiative, the Labour Ministry today proposed to set up 12 Advanced Training Institutes (ATIs) across the country at a cost of over 200 Crores to train vocational instructors .
