Friends, in this post we shall discuss about some important points you should know about Indian Geography. Happy Reading :)
  • India is the seventh largest country in the world with an area of 3287263 sq. km, which is 2.42% of world's area.
  • India is the second most populous country in the world with a population of 1,236,344,631 (approx by July 2014). Officially 1.21 billion (as of 2011 census), which is 17.44% of the world.
  • Indian subcontinent is located in the Northern and Eastern hemisphere.
  • India shares longest boundary with Bangladesh (4053 km), followed by China (3380 km), Pakisthan (2912 km), Nepal (1690 km(, Myanmar (1463 km), Bhutan (605 km) and Afghanistan (88 km).
  • In India, the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N latitude) passes through 8 states (Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram).
  • Islands : Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, Lakshadweep, Amindive and Minicoy in the Arabian Sea.
  • Indian Standard Time (IST) : The 82°30'E longitude is taken as the Standard Time Meridian of India, as it passes through middle of India (from Naini, near Allahabad).
  • The 82°30'E Meridian also dictates time in Sri Lanka and Nepal.
  • In the South, on the Eastern side, the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait seperate India from Sri Lanka.

  7. mam ... i am quite confused between national park.. and wildlife santuries . what is the criteria to define them.. kindly clear this also.. there seems two corbett park one in uttarakhand and Another in UP.. AS PER your article.. in the introductory passage it says oldest national park is corbett national park. earier i t was hailey natioal park built to protect bengal tigers??? .. please clear also.. hazaribagh national park is in which state bihar or jharkhand

    1. The main purpose of both of them are same Rupal.. I.e,. Conservation of Nature. National Parks are higher in status when compared to Sanctuaries... A Sanctuary can be upgraded as a National Park. However a National Park cannot be downgraded as a Sanctuary.

      No human habitation is permitted in National parks where as private ownership may be allowed in sanctuaries...

      And third doubt, Hazaribagh national park is in Jharkhand.. (its a typo over-there. corrected now)
