International Affairs
  • India is preparing to participate in the UN-sponsored international conference on Syria to be held in Geneva which will bring together all warring parties, domestic and international, to resolve the crisis and stabilize the Arab country.
  • India and Saudi Arabia are inking a key pact on labour cooperation when Saudi Labour Minister Adel Fakieh arrives at Mumbai on January 1st for a three-day visit.
National Affairs
  • After fulfilling his party's promise of providing free supply of 700 litres of water everyday for Delhi households, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday gave Delhiites a perfect New Year gift by slashing electricity charges and promising further revision of power tariffs.
  • The Rs 2,494 crore project of extension of Delhi Metro from Badarpur to YMCA Chowk, Faridabad is expected to be completed by September 2014.
  • Chandra Kant Birla, Chairman of Hindustan Motors Limited resigned from the board. He also stepped down from the post of director of Hindustan Motors (HM).
  • The new Land Acquisition Act, enacted by Parliament in 2013 to replace a 120-year-old legislation, comes into force from January 1st.
  • Against the backdrop of death of 26 people due to fire at a train last week, Railways on 31st December anounced that it is testing a new technology that will bring a train to halt automatically in case of smoke.
  • The Information and Broadcasting Ministry is set to launch a policy for advertisements on digital cinema halls soon, I&B Secretary Bimal Julka said.
  • Haryana to launch 'Mukhyamantri Muft Ilaaj Yojana' to provide essential health care services free of cost in all its health institutions.

Business and Economy
  • The output of eight core sector industries (coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement, electricity) slowed to 1.7 per cent in November due to poor showing by natural gas, fertiliser and petroleum refinery sectors.
  • Reserve Bank asked people not to fall prey to rumours circulating that banks would not accept banknotes with scribbling from January 1, 2014.
  • Four foreign direct investment proposals, including that of Mahle Holding India and HBO India, totalling Rs 502 crore have been cleared by the government.
  • SBI Life Insurance to relaunch about 10 products as part of regulatory compliance to make the policies more customer-friendly.

Sports
  • The 34th Sub-junior National Archery Championship began in Rohtak, Haryana.
  • All-rounder Yuvraj Singh was on Tuesday axed from India's ODI squad owing to his poor performance in South Africa even as rookies such as Ishwar Pandey and Stuart Binny got their maiden call-ups for India's tour of New Zealand starting with a one-day series from January 19.
  • The Indian One-day squad is all set to leave for the tour of New Zealand, where it will play a five-match series against the hosts from January 19, a week in advance in order to get acclimatised to the weather and pitch conditions there.
