International Affairs
  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left for China on the second leg of his two-nation tour after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin during which the two leaders pledged to “resolve all outstanding issues” related to the Kudankulam nuclear project.
  • US justified plans to release more than $1.6 billion in aid to Pakistan saying it was doing so partly to build Islamabad's counterinsurgency and counter terrorism capabilities "encouraged by an improvement in bilateral ties".
  • Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a major global player, is to propose India's name for participating in the Geneva II peace conference next month.
  • Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev kicks off his three-day visits to China. He is going to discuss trade, economic ties, and humanitarian cooperation between the two sides during the trip.

National Affairs
  • The Supreme Court directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to monitor and conduct periodic checks of all carbonated soft drinks as the issue relates to citizens’ fundamental right to life guaranteed under the Constitution.
  • India’s atomic power plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) on Tuesday generated 160 MW power at its first unit in Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP), said a senior official.
  • Death anniversary of Vithalbhai Patel, an Indian legislator and political leader, and co-founder of the Swaraj Party to be observed.
  • Megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be presented with the Hridaynath Award for his contribution in the film industry, this year.The lifetime achievement award will be presented to Big B, 71, by singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, who also completes 71 years in the music industry,
  • India will launch its ambitious pension scheme, the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana, for over five million overseas workers in Dubai next week.
  • Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will chair the 18th Annual Board Meeting of 'Partners in Population and Development' (PPD), to be held in Beijing on Oct. 23.

  • Rajya Sabha MP Kanwar Deep Singh was unanimously elected as the president of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) for a four-year term in the Annual General Meeting 
  • Justice Laxmi Kanta Mohapatra, a former judge of the Allahabad High Court, was sworn-in as a judge of Manipur High Court.

  • Former President of Athletics Federation of India, M L Jadam passed away at his home at Ajmer after a cardiac arrest.

Science and Technology
  • Smartphone maker BlackBerry has resumed official roll out of its instant messaging application BBM for users of iPhone and devices based of Android operating system.

Economy
  • The BSE benchmark Sensex on Tuesday fell 28.92 points on selling in bluechips like RIL and Hero MotoCorp, amid weak global cues ahead of key US job data that may influence the timing of Fed's anticipated move to taper the economic stimulus.
  • The Indian rupee lost 27 paise to Rs 61.79 against the US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange due to appreciation of the Greenback against other overseas currencies.
  • Mahindra Aerospace aims to start manufacturing eight-seater aircraft at its new plant near Bangalore in the next two years. In doing so, it should become the first private player to build civilian aircraft in the country, and the second after public sector Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).

  • With unrelenting bad weather playing spoilsport, North Zone and South Zone were declared joint winners of the Duleep Trophy this year after the fifth day's play of the final match was also called off without a ball being bowled in Kochi on Monday.
