  • US President Barack Obama today unveiled a USD 7 billion plan to upgrade African power networks, in bid to end blackouts that deter business investment on the continent.
  • After a 16-year absence from Australia, national carrier Air India will start direct flights between the two countries using its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft from August 29.

Economy
  • The panel of ministers on disinvestment will meet on Tuesday to decide on the base price for 4.01 per cent stake sale of Hindustan Copper (HCL) and the issue is likely to hit the markets on July 3.
  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) plans to raise Rs 13,500 crore through a mix of bonds and other instruments during the current fiscal to fund its business activities.
  • The government will borrow Rs 1.56 lakh crore in the July-September quarter to meet its financing requirements, which is in line with the schedule spelled out by the Finance Ministry at the beginning of the year.
  • About three dozens entities, including Aditya Birla Group, Tata Capital, Religare, Reliance Capital, are applying for bank licences, the deadline for which expires tomorrow.
  • Mahanagar Gas (MGL) increases CNG and PNG prices by Rs 2 per kg on rupee depreciation.


Science and Technology 
  • India’s first dedicated navigation satellite IRNSS—1A will be launched onboard PSLV—C22 around midnight tomorrow from the spaceport of Sriharikota with the mission countdown progressing smoothly.
  • Combining a three-bladed Darrieus turbine on top, a Savonius turbine underneath, and a generator in between, the SKWID power generation concept is claimed to be the world's first hybrid system "capable of maximizing the harvesting of ocean energy from wind and current".The SKWID, from the Japanese company Mitsui Ocean Development & Engineering Company (MODEC), is designed to capitalize on the energy potential available both in the winds above the ocean, and in the currents flowing beneath the waves.

Sports
  • Defender Sushila Chanu will lead an 18-member Indian team in the FIH Junior Women's World Cup to be played at Monchengladbach, Germany from July 27 to August 4.
  • The BCCI was awarded the two events during the International Cricket Council (ICC) Annual Conference that ended here Saturday. India was represented by interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, also a former ICC president.
