  • Legal - relating to the law
  • Casts a dark shadow on something - to spoil a good situation with something unpleasant
  • Withholding - to refuse to give something
  • Assent - the expression of approval or agreement
  • Incurring - experience something unpleasant
  • Flagrant - shocking because it is easy to observe
  • Accusing - saying that someone has done something wrong / illegal
  • Motive - a reason for doing something
  • Granting - agreeing to give or allow (something requested)
  • Cites - to mention something as proof
  • Prevailing - existing at a particular time / current
  • Allies - people who helps and supports you
  • Politicise - to make something or someone political
  • Reluctant - not willing to do something and therefore slow to do it
  • Retrospective - looking back on or dealing with past events or situations
  • Pre-empting - take action in order to prevent something happening
  • Contends - to say that something is true
  • Perquisites - advantages
  • Ought to - have to
  • Canvass - to try to get political support or votes
  • Evolved - developed slowly
  • Remunerates - to pay someone for work or services
  • Appointee - someone who has been chosen officially for a job or responsibility
  • Essentially - necessary or needed (a basic thing that you need)
  • Struck down - to declare (a law) illegal
  • Breaching - an act of breaking a law, promise, agreement
  • Ensure - to make something sure to happen
Topic 2 : "To be or not to be"
  • Referendum - a vote in which all the people in a country or an area are asked to give their opinion about or decide an important political or social question
  • Implication - the conclusion that can be drawn from something although it is not directly stated
  • Neck- and-neck race - a race inwhich participants are so close or similar that it's impossible to tell who's going to win
  • Poll tracker - a person who asks the same set of questions to a small group of people repeatedly over time to measure how their opinions, needs, etc. change
  • Resentment - to feel angry because you have been forced to accept someone or something that you do not like
  • Tories - supporters of the Conservative Party
  • Exploit - make full use of something
  • Brexit - an exit (= act of leaving) by Britain from the European Union (short for "British exit")
  • Owing to - because of
  • Blame - to say that someone or something is responsible for a fault or wrong
  • Immigration - the act of someone coming to live in a different country
  • Migrant - a person who moves from one place to another in order to find work or better living conditions
  • Hollow - without real significance or value
  • Rhetoric - speech or writing intended to be effective and influence people
  • On the other hand - in a way that is different from the first thing you mentioned
  • Assesses - calculate or estimate the price or value of
  • Instability - uncertainty caused by a sudden change in the present situation
  • Negotiate - to have formal discussions with someone in order to reach an agreement with them
  • Impact - a powerful effect
  • Concession - a thing that is granted, especially in response to demands
  • Unlikely - not the same as you would usually expect
  • Powerhouse - a country, organization, or person with a lot of influence, power, or energy
  • Domino effect - the situation in which something (usually something bad) happens, causing other similar events to happen
