Sustainable development can be defined as a dynamic process designed to €1) meet today's need without compromising the ability of fixture generations to fulfil their own needs. However, the concept of sustainable development moves beyond environment.

The term sustainable development was coined by Eva Balfour and Wes Jackson. The concept was developed by World Commission on Environment and Sustainable Development, commonly known as the Brundtland Commission in 1987, under the chairmanship of Gro Harlem Brundtland of Norway. The commission document was titled 'Our Common Future'.

The commission highlighted its goals and objectives which are still relevant today. It strived to achieve, long-term environmental strategies for achieving sustainable development; greater co-operation among developing countries and between countries at different stages of economical and social development so that they lead to the achievement of common and mutually supportive objectives that take account of the interrelationships between people, resources, environment and development.

International Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to be the Chief Guest for UN Vesak Day 2017 celebrations to be held in Sri Lanka from 12th to 14th of next month.
    • UN VesakDay is an officially recognized United Nations (UN) holiday that celebrates the birth of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.
  • US President Donald Trump today signed an executive order directing federal agencies to propose changes to the H-1B visa process to prevent its misuse. 
    • The order also seeks changes in government procurement practices to increase the purchase of American products in federal contracts.
  • US state of Maryland's Governor Larry Hogan today signed the 'no means no' bill into law, eliminating the requirement for the victims of sexual crimes to prove that they tried to physically resist their assailants. 
    • Previously, the victims had to prove that their resistance was overcome by "force, or the threat of force", according to Maryland Criminal Law.
  • United Nations is going to issue special stamps commemorating International Yoga Day on June 21 this year.

Public Sector Banks PNB, BOB's Merger on cards after SBI

After the merger of 5 associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank with State Bank of India (SBI), the government is planning for the next round of consolidation by allowing Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bank of Baroda to take over smaller lenders. The proposed bank consolidation is aimed at increasing operational efficiencies and managing the affairs of the lenders.

Upcoming Mergers under consideration :
  • Punjab & Sind Bank can be merged into Punjab National Bank.
  • Bank of Baroda is ready to take over some turnaround banks in the southern region, like Indian Overseas Bank.
The Economic Times reported that the government was actively looking for consolidation with the Prime Minister's Office keen on having a few large banks rather than several smaller ones.

Latest Current Affairs Highlights for Bank and Insurance Exams 2017

  • The Indian Navy has successfully conducted the maiden trial firing of a newly installed surface-to-air Barak missile system from its air-craft carrier INS Vikramaditya. The firing was conducted as part of the 'Operational Readiness Inspection' from 21 to 23 March. 
    • Note : The missile marks a significant milestone in providing air interception and defence capabilities and enhanced operational capabilities of the Navy's aircraft carrier and the flee. 
  • The Mental Healthcare Bill, which decriminalizes suicide and guarantees the right to bet-ter healthcare for people with mental illness, was unanimously passed in the Lok Sabha on 27th March, 2017. It mandates that a per-son attempting suicide shall be presumed to be suffering from 'severe stress' and there-fore, shall not be tried or punished by law. 
    • Note : The Bill mandates that persons with suicidal tendencies be provided help and rehabilitated. 
  • The Union Govt. has sanctioned 101 new integrated cold chain projects that will lever-age a total investment of Rs. 3,100 crore for creation of modern infrastructure for the food processing sector. Note: India is one of the largest food producers in the world and the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables yet only 2.2% of our fruits and vegetables are processed. Existing cold storages are concentrated in a few States and roughly 80% to 90% are used for potatoes. 0 The Supreme Court on 29th March banned the sale and registration of Bharat Stage (111S)-111 emission norm-compliant vehicles from April 1, 2017 saying the health of mil-lions was more important than commerdal interests. 
    • Note : The biggest difference between the two is the emission of carbon particulate matter, a major air pollutant. While BS-III vehicles emit 2.30gm of carbon monoxide per kg of fuel, the emission drops to 1gm per kg in BS-IV vehicles.
