International Current Affairs
  • Today (31st October) is World Savings Day.
    • This day was established on October 31, 1924, during the 1st International Savings Bank Congress (World Society of Savings Banks) in Milano, Italy.
  • Today (31st October) is World Cities Day.
    • Aim of this day : To promote international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.  
    • Theme of World Cities Day 2019 : "Changing the world: innovations and better life for future generations"
  • Today is Halloween.
    • The word Halloween came from 'Hallowed evening', and is the day before All Hallows Day - also known as All Saints' Day.
  • 29th October was observed as International Internet Day.
    • This was the year of 1969 when Charley Kline, a student programmer at the UCLA transmitted the first ever message on 29th of October in 1969.
    • Since the year 2005 the International Internet Day has been celebrated to commemorate this momentous day in the history of telecommunications and technology. 
  • 27th October was World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
    • This commemorative day was chosen by UNESCO in the year 2005 to raise of awareness of the significance of and preservation risks recorded sound and audiovisual documents (films, sound and video recordings, radio and television programmes).
    • Theme of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2019 :  "Engage the Past Through Sound and Images"
  • US President Donald Trump has confirmed that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a US military operation in Syria.
    • Important Note : The US military operation to kill ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was named after Kayla Mueller, a humanitarian worker from Arizona who was held hostage by the terrorist group. She was tortured by ISIS and repeatedly sexually abused by Baghdadi himself. 
  • Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his resignation amid the ongoing anti-government protests. 
    • The protests were triggered by the government's plans to impose taxes on WhatsApp calls and other apps, with demonstrators demanding broader economic reforms and an end to corruption.
National Current Affairs
  • Nation is observing Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) to mark the 144th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
    • Today is also the 4th anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project 'Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat' which aims to strengthen the cultural bond between the states. 
    • On this day in 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's memorial in Gujarat's Narmada district. 
      • Called the Statue of Unity, the bronze sculpture is the world's tallest statue measuring 600 feet (182m) and overshadows China's Spring Temple Buddha (153m) and USA's Statue of Liberty (93m). 
      • The 182-metre-tall Statue of Unity honouring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is double the height of USA's Statue of Liberty (93 metres).

  • 28th October 2019 was observed as National Ayurveda Day.
    • Ayurveda is the oldest healing science. It orginated in India more than 6000 years ago.
    • The literal meaning of Ayurveda is "Knowledge of Life".
    • To celebrate this day, the Al India Institute of Ayurveda in collaboration with Ministry of AYUSH organised a programme titled ‘Run for Ayurveda’. 
    • Around 3,000 people participated in the event.
  • Women in Delhi will not have to pay for bus rides in the state-owned DTC buses (both AC and Non-AC). 
  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched around 35,000 schemes worth over ₹1,600 crore as a part of the 'Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali' campaign that seeks to boost green cover and the water table in the state. 
    • Foundation stones were laid for 32,781 schemes, while another 2,391 were inaugurated by the CM.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Uber is going to launch its financial service Uber Money in 2020 to support both Uber riders and drivers.
    • Uber Money would be based on the National Payments Corporation of India's (NPCI) real-time payment system Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and will give drivers direct access to their money. 
    • Note : With this, India will be one of the 6 countries to get Uber Money.
  • World Bank President David Malpass has announced that the financing agency expects to continue with its $6 billion annual lending target for India
    • As 97 projects, with $24 billion committed, were presently being executed with loan assistance from the World Bank. 
  • China's legislature has passed a cryptography law amid the country's plans to launch its own digital currency. 
    • The law, effective from January 1, aims to strengthen the management of passwords and set standards for information and national security. 
    • This follows President Xi Jinping calling for China to accelerate the development of blockchain technologies.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a ₹1 crore penalty on Bandhan Bank for not meeting its promoter holding norms.  
    • Bandhan Bank had failed to pare the shareholding of Bandhan Financial Holdings from about 82% to 40% of its paid-up voting capital within three years from commencement. 
    • The deadline was set for August 2018.
  • Pakistan has issued a commemorative coin to mark Guru Nanak Dev's 550th birth anniversary in November. 
    • It will be available at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan's Kartarpur and is worth Pakistani Rupees 50. 
    • Note : The Kartarpur Corridor, constructed by Pakistan and India to allow Indian pilgrims to visit the gurdwara, will open from November 9.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore on Pune-based Janata Sahakari Bank and Rs 25 lakh on Jalgaon Peoples Co-operative Bank for violating income recognition, advances management and asset classification norms.
  • 3 Indian-origin CEOs have been featured in a list of world's top 10 best-performing chief executives.
    • On the 6th spot is Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, followed by MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga, ranked 7th and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella on the 9th spot. 
    • The Best-Performing CEOs in the World, 2019' list compiled by the Harvard Business Review (HBR) features 100 CEOs and has been topped by American technology company NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang.Among the top 10 chief executives on the list, three spots have been occupied by the Indian-origin CEOs.
Deaths
  • Former Supreme Court Judge and Karnataka Lokayukta N Venkatachala (89) passed away.
    • He served as a Supreme Court judge from July 1992 to July 1995. 
  • Paul Barrere (71), the guitarist-vocalist of rock band Little Feat, passed away. 
    • Paul joined the band in 1972.
  • Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former Lok Sabha MP Gurudas Dasgupta (83) passed away.
People in News
  • Lieutenant Colonel Swaroop Singh Kuntal became the fastest Indian to complete Ironman Malaysia triathlon in a record time of 12 hours and 14 minutes.
    • The triathlon consists of 3.8 km sea swimming, followed by 180 km cycling and finally 42.2 km of running.
  • Nirmal Purja, a 36-year-old Nepali mountaineer has become the world's fastest climber after scaling the world's 14 highest peaks in a record time of over 6 months.
New Appointments
  • Radha Krishna Mathur was sworn-in as the 1st Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh.
  • Girish Chandra Murmu was sworn-in as the 1st Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the 47th Chief Justice of India (CJI).
    • He is set to take oath on November 18. 
    • His name was recommended by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi earlier this month. 
  • BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar took oath as Haryana Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. 
    • JJP President Dushyant Chautala was sworn-in as Deputy CM.
  • Sophie Wilmes is set to take over as new caretaker Prime Minister of Belgium.
    • With this, she becomes the 1st female to hold the position. 
  • Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anup Kumar Singh took charge as the new Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) from October 28.
  • Pavan Kapoor, a 1990 batch Indian Foreign Service officer took charge as the new Indian Ambassador to UAE.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated world number six pair Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe of Japan in the BWF World Tour 750 French Open men's doubles semifinal. 
    • This is the 1st time an Indian men's doubles pair has reached the final of a World Tour 750 event. 
    • The pair will meet top-ranked Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya.
  • Former England women's cricket team bowler Eileen Ash, the oldest living Test cricketer, turned 108 years old. 
    • She made her debut against Australia and played seven Tests for England either side of World War II, taking 10 wickets at an average of 23.00. 
    • In 2011, Ash had become the 1st-ever female Test cricketer to turn 100.
  • The Bangladesh Cricket Board has agreed to play the second Test of the upcoming two-match series against India at Eden Gardens in Kolkata as a Day-Night match
    • The match will be both India and Bangladesh's 1st-ever Test under floodlights
