International Current Affairs
  • 5th October is observed as World Teachers' Day.
    • UNESCO proclaimed 5 October to be World Teachers’ Day in the year 1994, celebrating the great step made for teachers on 5 October 1966, when a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris adopted the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, in cooperation with the ILO.
    • Theme of the year 2019 : “Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.”
    • Note : National Teachers Day in India is observed on 5th September.
  • 4th October was World Animal Day.
    • This is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated annually on 4th October, the feast day of Franis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
  • Iran has passed a law allowing Iranian women to pass their citizenship to their children
    • Under the new law, children born to an Iranian mother and foreign father will get access to social and healthcare services that were previously denied to them on the basis that they were foreigners. 
National Current Affairs
  • Rajasthan has banned the production, storage, distribution and sale of paan masala and flavoured betel nut containing magnesium carbonate, nicotine, tobacco or mineral oil in the state. 
  • The Bombay High Court has  refused to declare Mumbai's Aarey Colony a forest by dismissing a petition filed by a city-based NGO. 
    • The court also dismissed all petitions against planned cutting of 2,646 trees in the Colony. 
    • Note : The Tree Authority (TA) of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had given its nod to cut the trees for Metro car shed in August.
  • Vande Bharat Express has started its commercial run.
    • This train will bring down the travel time between Delhi and Katra to 8 hours from the current 12 hours.
  • Goa Maritime Conclave started today in Goa.  
    • National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was the chief guest for the inaugural event of the Conclave. 
    • Indian Navy through the Naval War College, Goa is hosting this Conclave attended by Heads of Maritime Agencies, Chief of Navies of Ten key Indian Ocean Region countries.
    • Theme of Goa Maritime Conclave 2019 : 'Common Maritime Priorities in Indian ocean Region  and need for Reginal Maritime Security.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cut benchmark interest rates for the 5th time this year to spur growth after the economy expanded by 5% in Q1.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a commemorative ₹150 coin on Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary in Gujarat's Ahmedabad. 
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed the depositors of Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank (PMC) to withdraw up to ₹25,000 from ₹10,000 earlier. 
    • With this relaxation, over 70% of the depositors of the bank will be able to withdraw their entire account balance. PMC Bank, which has 137 branches across seven states, held deposits of over ₹11,600 crore.
Science & Technology
  • ISRO Chairman K Sivan has announced that ISRO is planning to carry out a space docking experiment next year. 
    • "Two experimental modules will be sent into space (onboard a PSLV rocket) and two will be docked (or latched) with each other," he said. 
    • This comes months after he had announced plans to set up India's own space station by 2030.
  • Microsoft has introduced a new version of the Windows 10 operating system, Windows 10X, designed for dual-screen devices, including its newly unveiled dual-screen device Surface Neo. 
    • The Windows 10X's Start Menu includes apps users can pin in place and a list of recent documents. 
    • Note : Microsoft also unveiled a foldable phone, Surface Duo, that will run on Google's Android operating system.
  • Hazzaa AlMansoori, the 1st astronaut to visit the International Space Station from the United Arab Emirates, safely returned to Earth after an 8-day stay. 
    • His stay covered 128 orbits of Earth and a journey of about 50 lakh kilometres, 
  • NASA has scheduled the 1st all-female spacewalk for October 21 with astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir
    • The two will plug in new, upgraded batteries for the International Space Station's solar power system. 
Deaths
  • The 2nd highest Buddhist leader of Bangladesh and head of Sima Bihar of Ramu in Cox's Bazar, Satyapriya Mohathero (89) passed away.
    • Born in Cox's Bazar's Ramu in 1930, he became a monk in 1950 and took over as the President of the Bangladesh Sangharaja of Bhikkhu Mahasabha in 2006.
    • He was awarded the second-highest civilian award of Bangladesh Ekushey Padak in 2015 for social work.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina today signed 7 agreements on the use of ports, water sharing, education, culture and coastal surveillance between India and Bangladesh. 
    • The leaders, who also inaugurated three projects via video link, had also held discussions on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York about a week ago.
New Appointments
  • Tata Communications has appointed Amur S Lakshminarayanan as its Managing Director and Group CEO designate
    • Lakshminarayanan, who will advise the Interim Management Committee of the firm, was earlier the President and CEO of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Japan. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • India Women T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur became the 1st Indian (male or female) to play 100 T20I matches, achieving the feat after taking the field in the sixth T20I against South Africa Women. 
    • Harmanpreet is followed by former Indian men's team captain MS Dhoni and opener Rohit Sharma, who have played 98 matches each.
  • Australia Women wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy has set the world record for the highest-ever T20I score by a woman
    • The 29-year-old scored 148*(61) against Sri Lanka Women on Wednesday. 
  • Cricketer Rohit Sharma has set the world record for hitting most sixes in a Test, achieving the feat after smashing 13 sixes in the first Test against South Africa. 
    • The 32-year-old, who slammed 6 sixes in the first innings and seven in the second, broke the record held by ex-Pakistan captain Wasim Akram, who hit 12 sixes against Zimbabwe in 1996.
