- US President Donald Trump has said that India and China are no longer developing nations and both are taking advantage of developing nations tag from the World Trade Organization.
- Trump, championing his America First policy, has been a vocal critic of India for levying allegedly high duties on US products.
- Note : The US and China are currently engaged in a bruising trade war after Trump imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese goods.
- Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik's administration will host the new Union Territory's 1st-ever Global Investors' Summit from October 12-14 following the abrogation of Article 370.
- The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will be the national partner for the meet.
- The Nation will celebrate the 73rd Independence Day tomorrow.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the National Flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort and address the nation.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Dynamic Facade Lighting of the Parliament House Estate yesterday.
- As many as 875 energy-efficient LED lights have been installed in the Parliament Complex.
- These are power efficient and uses only one-fifth of the electricity compared to other types of lights.
- The long-lasting, excellent intensity LED bulbs are capable of creating 16 million colour combinations and the LED lighting is programmable and electronically controlled through computers.
- The Union Government has announced that there has been a 41% reduction in stubble burning incidents in 2018 as compared to 2016.
- Centre today launched India's largest sanitation survey Swachh Survekshan Grameen-2019.
- The aim of this survey is to engage rural communities in improvement of the sanitation status of their districts and states through intensive campaign.
- The 45-day long survey will take place in 18 thousand villages of 698 districts.
- Mumbai is all set to get the 1st Indian Institute of Skills - IIS, the foundation stone of which will be laid next month.
Science & Technology
- India's second Moon mission Chandrayaan-2 left the Earth's orbit today's morning and is moving towards the Moon.
- ISRO said the spacecraft carried out the manoeuvre called 'Trans Lunar Injection' at 2:21 am, following which it successfully entered the Lunar Transfer Trajectory.
- Note : Chandrayaan-2 is expected to land on lunar surface on September 7.

- All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has issued a press release stating that it has "banned and boycotted" singer Mika Singh from the Indian film industry after he performed in Pakistan.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Indian rupee has become Asia's worst-performing currency in August amid foreign fund outflows, global trade tensions and pressure from China's yuan.
- The local currency has slumped 3.49% against the US dollar so far this month, heading towards its second-worst monthly loss in four years.
- Denmark's third-largest bank, Jyske Bank, has launched the world's 1st negative interest rate home loan, where the charge is -0.5% a year.
- This means that Jyske Bank will effectively pay borrowers 0.5% a year to take out a loan.
- Borrowers will make monthly repayments but the amount outstanding will be reduced each month by more than what the borrower paid.
- Paytm has confirmed that its consumer lending service Paytm Postpaid has been entirely discontinued.
- Started in December 2018, Paytm Postpaid allowed users to buy products and services and pay later.
- Through the service, Paytm offered a credit limit of up to ₹60,000 without any interest.
- A rare variety of tea named ‘Golden Butterfly’ from Upper Assam’s Dikom Tea Estate set a new record on as it was auctioned for Rs.75,000 per kg at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC).
- It broke the record for highest price fetched by a tea at a public auction for 3rd time in a fortnight.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked banks not to count failed transactions at ATMs due to technical reasons as part of "free ATM transactions" permitted every month.
- Besides, the use of ATMs for balance enquiry and fund transfers too should be not part of the free transactions facility given to a customer.
Recent Committees in News
- High Level Committee (HLC) on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) constituted by Ministry of Corporate Affairs recommended making CSR expenditure tax deductible and to make compliance violations as a civil offence that attracts penalties.
- The High Level Committee on CSR was constituted in October 2018 under Chairmanship of Secretary (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) Injeti Srinivas to review existing CSR framework and make recommendations on strengthening CSR ecosystem, including implementation, monitoring and evaluation of outcomes.
Awards & Honors
- President Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has approved 132 Awards to Armed Forces Personnel and members of Paramilitary Forces.
- The awards include 2 Kirti Chakras, 1 Vir Chakra, 14 Shaurya Chakras, 8 Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 90 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 5 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry), 7 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 5 Yudh Seva Medals.
- From the Army, Sapper Prakash Jadhav has been posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, the second-highest peacetime gallantry award. Deputy Commandant, CRPF, Harshpal Singh has also been awarded the Kirti Chakra.
- IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who shot down a Pakistani F-16 jet, will be awarded Vir Chakra.

- The famous Panchamritham, an offering of the Palani Dandayuthaswamy temple, in Tamil Nadu, has been granted the Geographical Identity (GI) tag.
- Note : This is the first temple offering - Prashad - from Tamil Nadu - to be conferred this honour.
- Earlier, the Tanjavoor Veenai, Madurai Malligai, Neelgiri Tea leaves as well as Turmeric from Erode from Tamil Nadu have been bestowed with Geographical Identity tags.
