International Current Affairs
- Today (11th July) is World Population Day.
- This day was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989.
- Objective of World Population Day : To increase the awareness of the people towards the worldwide population issues.
- Theme of World Population Day 2019 :
- Unlike every other year, the UN Council has not decided a specific theme for the year 2019, but will instead call for global attention to the unfinished business of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development.
- The landmark conference was attended by 179 governments who recognised that reproductive health and gender equality are essential for achieving sustainable development.
- To achieve the unmet goals, the UNFPA, together with the governments of Kenya and Denmark, will be convening a high-level conference in Nairobi in November to accelerate the efforts.
- The 2nd India-Russia Strategic Economic Dialogue (IRSED) was held in in New Delhi, under the chairmanship of Rajiv Kumar (NITI Aayog vice chairman) and Timur Maksimov (Deputy minister of the economic development of the Russian Federation).
- The Second meeting of the IRSED focussed on 6 core areas of cooperation. They are :
- Development of Transport Infrastructure and Technologies
- Development of Agriculture and Agro-Processing sector
- Small and Medium Business support
- Digital Transformation and Frontier Technologies
- Cooperation in Trade, Banking, Finance
- Industry; and Tourism & Connectivity.
National Current Affairs
- Pro-Khalistani group ‘The Sikhs for Justice’ (SFJ) has been banned by Central government for its alleged anti-national activities.
- It was banned under Section 3 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for its alleged anti-national activities.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled licences of 1,701 Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) in 2018-19 for not meeting minimum capital requirements.
- Nearly 779 licences were cancelled in October and November 2018, soon after IL&FS defaulted on debt repayments, sparking a crisis in the sector. RBI had cancelled 26 NBFC licences in 2017-18.
- With $65 million (₹444 crore), Bollywood Actor Akshay Kumar has become the only Indian to enter Forbes magazine's Highest-Paid Entertainers List 2019.
- Akshay, who came 33rd, beat Hollywood actors including Chris Evans and Bradley Cooper.
- Facebook today announced that it has no plans to offer its Calibra digital wallet services in India due to local restrictions, effectively ruling out the rollout of its Libra cryptocurrency in the country.
- According to the Global Prime Office Occupancy Costs survey released by property consultant CBRE, New Delhi's Connaught Place (CP) is the 9th most expensive office location in the world with an annual rent of nearly USD 144 per sq ft.
- For the second year, Hong Kong's Central district retained the top spot as the world's most expensive market for prime office rents, with the prime occupancy costs valued at USD 322 per sq.ft.
- To fund less-polluting transportation projects, the French government is going to impose a tax of up to €18 on plane tickets for all flights from airports in France.
- The move, which will take effect from 2020, will see a tax of €1.5 imposed on economy-class tickets on internal flights and those within Europe, with the highest tariff applied to business-class travellers flying outside the bloc.
- Note : A similar tax was introduced in Sweden in April 2018, which imposed an added charge of up to €40 on every ticket in a bid to lessen the impact of air travel on the climate.
Science & Technology
- Ahead of India's second Moon Mission 'Chandrayaan-2' launch scheduled for July 15 from Sriharikota, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) today released the 1st images of India's heaviest rocket GSLV MkIII-M, referred to as 'Baahubali'.
- The three-stage vehicle, India's most powerful launcher to date, will carry Chandrayaan-2 to its designated orbit.
- The mission aims to place robotic rover 'Pragyan' on the Moon.
- The Indian Army has placed an order for procuring Israeli anti-tank Spike missiles, known for their precision targeting with an ability to pierce even bunkers, under emergency purchases to meet operational preparedness.
- The missiles can hits targets at a range of four kilometers and can be deployed in both mountains and plains.
- They can be fired from different platforms -- vehicles, helicopters, ships and ground launchers -- and can be deployed even along the Line of Control (LoC).
New Appointments
- Pravin Kumar Purwar has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for a period of 5 years.
- Currently he is working as the CMD of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).
Sports Current Affairs
- After taking his 1st wicket in the 2019 World Cup semi-final against England, Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc set the record for taking most wickets in a World Cup edition.
- The 29-year-old took his tally to 27 wickets in the current edition, overtaking Glenn McGrath, who had taken 26 wickets in the 2007 World Cup.
- Indian weightlifters Rakhi Halder and Davinder Kaur won a Gold medal each in the senior women's section on the second day of Commonwealth Championships.
- Kaur lifted a total of 184kg to win the women's 59kg Gold while Halder clinched Gold in the 64kg category.
- Note : India also won five other gold medals in junior and youth sections.
