  • Today is Independence Day of The Bahamas.

  • UK's Ambassador to the US, Kim Darroch has resigned after leaked emails revealed that he had called President Donald Trump's administration "dysfunctional" and "incompetent". 
    • This comes after Trump said that the US would no longer deal with Darroch. 
  • The UK has announced that starting September, boys in the year 8 of the country's schooling system, aged around 12-13, will receive free vaccination against sexually-transmitted Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
    • The move aims to prevent over 1 lakh cancer cases by 2058. About 5% of all cancers worldwide are linked to HPV virus.
  • India handed over 250 pre-fabricated houses for use of displaced Muslim minorities, who are currently residing in Myanmar’s Rakhine State
    • The houses delivered to Myanmar for displaced Rohingya returnees in Rakhine State are under India’s ‘Rakhine State Development Programme’ (RSDP) for $25 Million for a period of 5 years.
National Current Affairs
  • The Union Cabinet has cleared amendments to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO ).
    • This act deals with crime against children, to include death penalty for a sexual attack on minors among other changes.
    • The other amendments to the Act approved by the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi include provisions for imprisonment and fine to curb child pornography.
  • The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has proposed to remove the mandatory Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) and introduce a penalty for absenteeism
    • The CSAT tests candidate's comprehension, communication and decision-making skills. 
    • Due to mass protests, it was made a 'qualifying' test in 2015 and candidates have to score a minimum of 33% to qualify for the exam.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India's largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), has lowered its lending rates by 5 basis points (bps) across all tenors with effect from today (10 July 2019).
    • With this, the one-year marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) now stands at 8.40 %. 
    • Note : With this MCLR cut, home, car and other retail loans will get cheaper. 
  • The government has identified ONGC, Indian Oil, GAIL and NTPC as possible candidates for cutting its direct holding to below 51%.
    • The Centre has set the disinvestment target for 2019-20 at ₹1.05 lakh crore.
  • Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today announced a ₹1,000 crore fund for farmers' welfare in the 2019-20 state Budget
    • He also announced Janta Clinics to provide free and accessible treatment. 
    • Gehlot further announced ₹1,000 crore assistance under the Youth Employment Scheme, and said 75,000 vacant positions would be filled in various government departments to provide jobs to the youth.
  • Deposits in bank accounts opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) have crossed the ₹1 lakh crore mark. 
    • As per the Finance Ministry, the total balance in over 36.06 crore Jan Dhan accounts was at ₹1,00,495.94 crore as on July 3. 
    • Note : The PMJDY was launched to provide universal access to banking facilities to the people in the country.
  • The Parliament of India has adopted a statutory resolution for levying 200% duty on all goods exported from or originating in Pakistan
    • The two statutory resolutions were moved by Anurag Thakur, Minister of State (M/S) for Finance on behalf of Union Minister of Finance Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman and both were adopted by voice vote.
Awards & Honors
  • A unique strategy adopted by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) called ‘Plan Bee’ to keep wild elephants away from train tracks has won the ‘Best Innovation Award’ in Indian Railways for the 2018-19 fiscal. 
    • The prize is awarded by Indian Railways and comprises of a citation and a cash award of Rs.3 lakh.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Bharat Chamber of Commerce (BCC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BRICS of Commerce and Industry for promoting trade and investments between BRICS countries and eastern part of India, in particular.
    • This MoU will enable both the signatories BCC and BRICS chamber to share trade related information and exchange trade delegations among 5 members of group namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Deaths
  • Former Indian football team goalkeeper AU Celestine (73) passed away.
    • Celestine, who represented India in 1969 Merdeka Cup in Malaysia, had played for Tamil Nadu men's team in the senior nationals as a goalkeeper. 
    • He also coached the Tamil Nadu state junior, sub-junior and women teams.
New Appointments
  • 1989 batch IAS officer of Haryana cadre Arun Kumar has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) in Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in rank and pay of Additional Secretary. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Sprinter Dutee Chand bagged Gold medal in the women's 100-metre event at the 30th World University Games in Italy's Naples, clocking a time of 11.32 seconds. 
    • Note : This is the 1st time that an Indian has won a 100-metre gold in any edition of the World University Games.
  • Boxer Amit Panghal has secured a direct entry to India's eight-member squad of AIBA Men's World Championships which will be held in Russia in September. 
    • He was given the spot for fulfilling the original criterion of winning gold at Asian Championships. 
  • New Zealand defeated India by 18 runs in the 1st semi-final of the 2019 World Cup at Manchester today to reach World Cup final for the second straight time. 
    • This is the second straight time that India have been eliminated from World Cup in semi-finals.
