International Current Affairs
  • Today (17th June 2019) is World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
    • This day is a United Nations observance with the purpose highlight ways to prevent desertification and recover from drought. Each annual celebration has a different theme. It should be celebrated all over the world.
    • Theme of World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2019 :  “Let’s Grow the Future Together
  • Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman attended a ceremony to unveil a sign for a new community named after US President Donald Trump in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights
    • The sign of the community, named 'Trump Heights', was decorated with the Israeli and US flags and planted on a patch of synthetic grass.
  • The armies of India and Myanmar carried out ‘Operation Sunrise 2’, a 3-week-long coordinated operation in their respective border areas to bust terror camps. 
    • The operation was targeted at militant groups operating in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. This was the 2nd edition of Operation Sunrise. 
  • The 3rd edition of Namaste Thailand Film Festival was recently concluded in Delhi.
    • The film festival was inaugurated with the screening of modern Thai romantic comedy Friend Zone.
    • Important Points to Note :
      • Namaste Thailand Film Festival is an annual festival organised to bridge the gap between Indian and Thai cultures. 
      • The festival featured 6 movies which presented the culture and tradition of Thailand in different ways. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • To ensure greater transparency and accountability, the Jammu and Kashmir Bank will now come under the purview of Right to Information Act and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) guidelines.
    • This comes days after J&K Bank's Chairman Parvez Ahmed was removed over alleged corruption, nepotism and favouritism.
  • State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) has put on sale 6 Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) amounting to over ₹1,000 crore.
    • The reserve price for this has been fixed at over ₹341 crore. 
New Appointments
  • Former Union Minister and 7-time MP Virendra Kumar took oath as the Pro-tem Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha
    • President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath in the presence of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and PM Narendra Modi.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh today took oath as the members of the 17th Lok Sabha
    • Pro-tem Speaker Virendra Kumar administered the oath on the first day of the maiden session of the 17th Lok Sabha. 
  • Denmark’s Inger Andersen took charge as the new Executive Director (ED) of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
    •  She will hold the designation for period of 4-years.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India defeated Pakistan by 89 runs (DLS method) in a rain-curtailed match at Manchester to register their 3rd victory in 2019 World Cup
    • With this, India extended their 100% winning run against Pakistan in World Cup to 7 matches
    • The match witnessed India register their highest ever total (336/5) against Pakistan in a World Cup match.
    • India's previous highest World Cup total against Pakistan had come in 2015 edition when they scored 300/7 in their allotted 50 overs. 
    • Opener Rohit Sharma smashed his second hundred in 2019 World Cup, reaching the three-figure mark off 85 balls against Pakistan. 
      • It is the 32-year-old batsman's second ODI hundred against Pakistan and overall 24th in ODI cricket. 
      • Note : Rohit is the 4th Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Shikhar Dhawan to score at least three World Cup hundreds.
    • India captain Virat Kohli has become the fastest batsman to score 11,000 runs in ODI cricket.
      • The 30-year-old overtook Sachin Tendulkar, who reached 11,000 runs in his 276th innings, against England in 2002.
      • Note : Kohli was also the fastest to 8,000, 9,000 and 10,000 ODI runs.
  • Indian squash player Joshna Chinappa won a record 17th national title by defeating Sunayna Kuruvilla. 
    • With this Chinappa broke the 16-time national champion Bhuvneshwari Kumari's record, which stood for 27 years.
