  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Deepen - if a bad situation deepens, it becomes worse
  • Dilemma - a situation in which you have to make a difficult decision
  • Uphold - if a court of law upholds something such as a claim, it says that it is correct
  • Majority - most of the people or things in a group
  • Faction - a small group within a larger group, consisting of people with different opinions from the rest
  • Confidante - a woman who you trust and can discuss your secrets and private feelings with
  • Nephew - a son of your brother or sister, or a son of your husband’s or wife’s brother or sister
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
  • Consolidate - to make the power, position, or achievements you already have stronger or more effective so that they are likely to continue
  • Loyalist - someone who supports their government, especially during a revolution
  • Disqualify - to not allow someone to do something because they have committed an offence
  • Outmanoeuvre - to defeat or gain an advantage over someone by being more clever or skilful than they are
  • Forge - to develop a successful relationship, especially in business or politics, with another country, organization, or person
  • Interim - intended to last or perform an activity only until someone or something permanent or final is available
  • Contention - an opinion or statement that something is true, especially one made during a discussion or argument
  • Vitiate - to make something less effective or legally acceptable
  • Malice - a strong feeling of wanting to hurt someone or be unkind to them
  • Affidavit - a legal document containing a written promise that something is true
  • Renege - to decide not to do something that you promised to do
  • Set back  - to delay the progress of someone or something
  • By-election - an election in one particular area to choose a new representative in parliament or on a council, or to replace someone who has died or left the job
  • Constituency - a division of a country that elects a representative to a parliament
  • Allegation - a statement that someone has done something wrong or illegal even though this has not been proved
  • Hing on - if one thing hinges on another, the first thing depends on the second thing or is very influenced by it
  • Tactically - in a way that relates to a planned method of achieving something
  • Mainstream - considered ordinary or normal and accepted or used by most people
  • Acid test - a fact, event, or situation that proves something, for example whether a plan will work
  • Survival - the fact or state of continuing to live or exist, especially in difficult conditions

  • Influenza - a very common infectious disease that lasts a short time and makes you feel hot or cold, weak, and tired (flu)

  • Surveillance - the process of carefully watching a person or place that may be involved in a criminal activity
  • Moreover - used for introducing an additional and important fact that supports or emphasizes what you have just said
  • Pandemic - a disease that affects almost everyone in a very large area
  • Preparedness - the state of being ready for something
  • Contain - to control
  • Deem - to consider that someone or something has a particular quality
  • Pre-existing - used for describing something that already existed before something else started
  • Chronic - a chronic illness or chronic pain is serious and lasts for a long time
  • Susceptible - easily influenced or affected by something
  • Hypertension - a condition in which your blood pressure is extremely high
  • Advisable - if something is advisable, it is a good idea to do it, especially in order to avoid problems
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Uptake -the rate or act of accepting something
  • Precautionary - done or used for protection against possible harm or trouble
  • Etiquette - a set of rules for behaving correctly in social situations
  • Cough etiquette - a series of actions to take if you are coughing or sneezing, which are designed to reduce the spread of respiratory illness to others
