International Current Affairs
  • In a big overnight operation, Indian Air Force (IAF)’s Mirage 2000 fighter jets have completely destroyed multiple terror camps in Pakistan. 
    • IAF jets destroyed the biggest training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)  in Pakistan's Balakot in the strike carried out by 12 Mirage 2000 fighter jets.
    • The JeM camp was run by the terror group's chief Masood Azhar's brother-in-law Yusuf Azhar
    • A very large number of JeM terrorists, trainers and senior commanders were eliminated in the strike.
    • Note : The air strike is the 1st time Indian Air Force has been used in Pakistan-controlled airspace after the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
  • Kim Jong-un became the 1st leader of North Korea to travel to Vietnam since his grandfather, Kim Il-sung, visited in 1964.
    • Kim arrived today for a summit with US President Donald Trump. 
    • Important Points to Note
      • The 2nd high profile summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take place in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi tomorrow.
      • During their two days of talks, the two leaders are expected to have several rounds of discussions in multiple settings, including a one-on-one, aimed at normalising ties and complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. 
      • They are also likely to review the progress made after their first historic summit in Singapore last summer.
  • In a first and strategically significant move, India has been invited to the inaugural plenary of the foreign ministers' conclave of the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation), a powerful grouping of Muslim majority nations, in Abu Dhabi next month.
    • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will attend it as the 'guest of honour'.
National Current Affairs
  • India is hosting the ‘4th Global Digital Health Partnership Summit’in New Delhi.
  • Union Health Minister J P Nadda inaugurated the summit in the presence of Ravi Shankar Prasad Union Minister of Law & Justice and Electronics & Information Technology and Health Ministers from several countries.
    • The Global Digital Health Partnership is an international collaboration of governments, government agencies and multinational organisations dedicated to improving the health and well-being of their citizens through the best use of evidence-based digital technologies.
    • The summit will provide an opportunity to support governments and health system reformers to improve the health and well-being of their citizens through digital technologies.
Science & Technology
  • The UAE's Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) today announced the 1st Emirati Arab astronaut will go to the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft on September 25
    • Either Emirati astronaut Hazzaa Al Mansouri or Sultan Al Neyadi will go on the eight-day space mission. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended its February 28 deadline for completion of KYC norms for digital wallets by six months. 
    • The decision was based on stakeholders' requests to defer the deadline over difficulties in undertaking Aadhaar e-KYC. 
  • The Delhi government presented a Rs. 60,000 crore budget for 2019-20 in the Assembly today.
    • 26 per cent of total budget have been earmarked for education. 
    • A total of 375 crore rupees have been set aside for 100 mohallah clinics.
    • A provision of 6,380 crores have been made in the budget for Municipal corporations of Delhi.

  • President Ram Nath Kovind today conferred the Gandhi Peace Prizes for the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. Here are the awardees :

        • Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari - for its contribution in Rural Development, Education and Development of natural resources.
      • 2016 :
        • Akshaya Patra Foundation - for its contribution in providing mid-day meals to millions of children across India
        • Sulabh International - for its contribution in improving the condition of sanitation in India and emancipation of manual scavengers
      • 2017
        • Ekal Abhiyan Trust - for its contribution in providing Education for Rural and Tribal Children in remote areas pan India, Rural Empowerment, Gender and Social Equality
      • 2018 :
        • Yohei Sasakawa (Japan) - for his contribution in Leprosy Eradication in India and across the world
    • About Gandhi Peace Prize :
      • Instituted in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the annual award is given to individuals and institutions for their contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.
      • The award comprises a cash award of one crore rupees, a citation in a scroll, a plaque and a traditional handicraft item. 
  • As many as 15 women won awards at Oscars 2019.
    • This is the most number of Oscars won by women in a single edition of the prestigious award ceremony. 
    • The previous record for most female wins in an Oscar ceremony was 12, which came both in 2007 and 2015. In 2018, women had bagged six Oscars.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta lifted the Cannes International Open trophy (Chess.)
  • Uttar Pradesh batsman Suresh Raina has become the 1st Indian cricketer to reach the 8,000-run mark in T20 cricket. 
    • Raina crossed the mark in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 match between Uttar Pradesh and Puducherry. 
    • Note : With this, Raina became the 6th highest run-getter in T20s, with Chris Gayle occupying the top spot with 12,298 runs in 369 matches.
