National Current Affairs
  • Today (24th February) is Central Excise Day
    • This day is observed to  encourage the employees of excise department to carry out the central excise duty all over the India in better way in order to prevent the corruption in goods manufacturing business as well as implement other rules to carry out best possible excise services.
  • The Odisha government has launched a Boat Ambulance Service to ferry patients to hospitals in remote areas. 
    • The project, which costs around ₹5.40 crore includes six boat ambulances and 60 jetties with walkway. 
  • Names of over 5 lakh sex offenders, who were convicted for crimes against women have been added to the National registry of Sex Offenders
    • The database, which can only be accessed by law enforcement agencies,  includes name, address, photograph and fingerprint details of the offenders. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched ₹75,000 crore farmers income scheme from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur. 
    • Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi proposes to give ₹6,000 to farmers in three instalments annually. 
  • Bihar has become the 1st state in the country to have raised a special dog squad to detect liquor consignment.
    • As many as 20 liquor-tracker dogs which were imparted training for nine months in Hyderabad have been deployed in nine police ranges in the state. 
    • Note : Bihar had banned liquor in the state in 2016.
  • The Madhya Pradesh government rolled out its flagship ‘Mukhyamantri Yuva Swabhiman Yojana’ that guarantees 100 days of employment every year to urban youth from economically weaker sections.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the amendments in the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, which will rationalise and harmonise the system of levying stamp duty and help curb tax evasion.
    • The amendments propose to create the legal and institutional mechanism to enable states to collect stamp duty on securities market instruments at one place by one agency on one Instrument.
  • The government has banned private companies from mining rare earth minerals found in the beach sands. 
    • Important Points to Note :
      • Rare earth minerals are present along the coastlines of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Odisha
      • These minerals include monazite, an atomic mineral that can be processed to yield thorium, which can be combined with a fissile material like plutonium to develop nuclear fuel.

  • Dr Divya Karnad, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at Ashoka University recieved the prestigious Future For Nature 2019 Award for her work on sustainable fishing of sharks and Olive Ridley sea turtles.
    • Important Point to Note : With this, Divya Karnad has become the 2nd Indian and the 1st Woman to receive this prestegious award.

  • The Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) has been honoured with the prestigious ‘FICCI CSR Award’ for Women Empowerment.
    • JSPL was awarded for its innovative and high impact women empowerment programmes, implemented by the company’s CSR Arm – JSPL Foundation, across its operational areas in the country.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Indian government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada to work on various environmental issues including climate change, forest resource management and wildlife.
Science & Technology
  • The Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) has unveiled the Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) at the Aero India 2019. 
    • Aim of AWG : To provide an innovative solution to meet the ever-increasing need for drinking water worldwide.
New Appointments
  • Saudi Arabia has named Princess Reema bint Bandar as its 1st female ambassador to the United States
    • Bandar replaces Prince Khalid bin Salman, the younger brother of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. 
  • Bollywood Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan has been appointed as the Ambassador of Swasth Immunised India campaign
    • The Swasth Immunised India campaign has been launched by Serum Institute of India (SII) and Network 18.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Chennai Spartans have won the inaugural Pro Volleyball League Title by defeating Calicut Heroes.
  • Indian hockey player Manpreet Pawar was named as the Male Player of the Year 2018 by the Asian Hockey Federation. 
    • The Indian women’s team striker Lalremsiami bagged the Rising Player of The Year 2018 award. 
    • The Indian Men’s team was awarded the Best Performance of The Year after being the only Asian side to reach the World Cup's top-eight in Bhubaneswar.
  • Commonwealth Games 2014 gold medallist Apurvi Chandela broke the women's 10m Air Rifle category world record to clinch India's first gold medal at the New Delhi World Cup today. 
  • Shooter Saurabh Chaudhary won Gold medal in Men's 10m Air Pistol event at ISSF World Cup in New Delhi with a world record score of 245 points in the final. 
    • With this, the 16-year-old secured India its 3rd shooting quota for the 2020 Olympics
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) have suspended all Indian applications to host future events and urged international sports federations not to stage competitions in the country after two Pakistanis were denied visas to compete in New Delhi.
    • The denial of entry visas for two shooters due to take part in a World Cup event in the Indian capital this weekend followed last week's attack by a Pakistan-based militant group in Kashmir, which killed at least 40 CRPF personnel.
