  • Emergency - an unexpected situation involving danger in which immediate action is necessary
  • Undermine - to make something or someone become gradually less effective, confident, or successful
  • Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them
  • Trivial - not very important, serious, or valuable
  • Aftermath - the effects and results of something bad or important
  • Exigency - something difficult that you must deal with as part of a situation or job
  • Opt for - to make a choice or decision from a range of possibilities
  • Invasion - a situation in which a large number of people or things come to a place at the same time, especially in an annoying way
  • Polarise - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other, or to cause this to happen
  • Strident - holding firm opinions or beliefs and tending to express them frequently, in a way that offends some people
  • Immigration - the process in which people enter a country in order to live there permanently
  • Context - the general situation in which something happens, which helps to explain it
  • Federal - a federal country or system is one in which individual states make their own laws, but a national government is responsible for areas such as defence and foreign policy
  • Furlough - a period of time during which someone is allowed to be away from a job or the armed forces
  • Congressional - relating to US congress
  • Appropriation - the action of taking something, especially when you have no right to take it
  • Soared - to quickly increase to a high level
  • Back down - to stop asking for something, or to stop saying that you will do something, because a lot of people oppose you
  • Yield - to produce something useful such as information or evidence
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Beg the question - to make you want to know the answer to a particular question
  • Devote - to spend a lot of time or effort doing something
  • Allude - to mention someone or something in an indirect way
  • Migration - the process by which people or animals migrate to another place or country
  • Engulf - to cover or surround something in a way that harms or destroys it
  • Migrant - someone who travels to another place or country in order to find work
  • Pander - to do or say what someone wants in order to please them, even though you know it is not right
  • Conservative - not willing to accept much change, especially in the traditional values of society
  • Wobbly - moving from side to side in a way that is not steady
  • Status quo - the present situation, or the way that things usually are
  • Chutzpah - strong confidence in yourself so that you can say or do rude or shocking things without becoming ashamed or embarrassed
  • Coexistence - a situation in which people live together, or things exist together, at the same time or in the same place
  • Pluralism - the idea that people can and should live together without fighting, despite differences in race, religion, culture, politics etc

  • Dilemma - a situation in which you have to make a difficult decision
  • Inherent - an inherent quality is a basic or essential feature that gives something its character
  • Acrimony - angry and unpleasant words and feelings
  • Framework - a set of principles, ideas etc that you use when you are forming your decisions and judgments
  • Abide by - to follow a rule, decision, or instruction
  • Uphld - if a court of law upholds something such as a claim, it says that it is correct
  • Prosecutor - a lawyer whose job is to prove in court that someone accused of a crime is guilty
  • Deploy - if a government or army deploys soldiers or weapons, it uses them
  • Imply - if one thing implies another thing, the other thing is likely to exist or be true
  • Inapplicable - not relevant
  • Council - the elected officials who govern a local area such as a city or county: can be followed by a singular or plural verb
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • Prevail - to exist at a particular time or in a particular situation
  • On the other hand - used for giving two different opinions about something
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Federalism - the system of giving power to a central authority
  • Constituent - one of the parts that form something when they combine
  • Regulate - to control an activity, process, or industry officially by using rules
