International Current Affairs
  • The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provincial government of Pakistan has declared the ancient Hindu religious site of Panj Tirath (Peshawar) as National heritage.
    • Panj Tirath derives its name from the five pools of water in the site which also has a temple. 
    • According to the epic of Mahabharat, the mythical king Pandu belonged to this area and Hindus used to come to these pools for bathing during the auspicious month of Karteek and worship for two days under the trees.

  • Hyderabad's Secunderabad Railway Station became the 1st railway station of South Central Railway (SCR) to hoist a gigantic Tricolour on a 100 feet tall pole in the circulating area of it's main entrance. 
    • The flag is an attempt to rekindle the spirit of nationalism and instill the sense of pride among rail passengers. 
  • The 27th New Delhi World Book Fair has began today at Pragati Maidan.
    • Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar inaugurated the 9-day annual event. 
    • More than 600 publishers are displaying books at more than 1350 stalls at the fair.
    • To mark Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary, there is a special exhibition of books on and by Mahatma Gandhi.
    • The theme of this year is 'Readers with Special Needs'. 
  • The Lok Sabha today passed 3 Bills. They are :
    • Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018 : To provide legal backing to voluntary seeding of biometric Aadhaar ID with mobile numbers and bank accounts after the Supreme Court barred mandatory use of the 12-digit unique identifier by private firms.
    • Companies (Amendments) Bill, 2018 : To improve ease of doing business, declog the NCLT and prescribe strong action against non-compliant companies. 
    • New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill, 2018 : To set up a revamped International Arbitration Centre at New Delhi with an aim to make India the hub of arbitration.

  • A special anti-money laundering court has declared liquor baron Vijay Mallya a "fugitive economic offender".
    • With this, Mallya became the 1st person to be declared so under a new law
    • This ruling empowers authorities to confiscate the assets of Mallya, who owes over ₹9,000 crore to Indian banks.

  • Lok Sabha today passed the Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2018 that seeks to improve ease of doing business, declog the NCLT and prescribe strong action against non-compliant companies.
    • The bill has been brought with a view to declog the Special Courts and National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
    • It will also reduce the burden on NCLT and Special Courts and improve ease of doing business in the country.
  • To give Indian patients access to foreign medicines, the government today removed the price control on innovative medicines developed by foreign companies for five years from the date of commencement of their commercial marketing. 
    • These include orphan drugs which are used for treating diseases that are rare. The government said the price control exemption gives .

  • Andhra Pradesh government bagged the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) Award for speedy execution of Polavaram multipurpose project on the Godavari river.
    • The state's Water Resources Minister Devineni Umamaheswar Rao received the award in the category of "Best Implementation of Water Resources Project" for better planning, implementation and monitoring.
  • The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) presented the National Entrepreneurship Awards 2018 by honouring 30 outstanding young entrepreneurs and three entrepreneurship ecosystem builders for their exceptional contribution in entrepreneurship development at a ceremony held in New Delhi.

      • Roshan Kahtoon : Despite her physical disability, has beaten all odds and has set up a small bangle manufacturing unit.
      • Shruthi Reddy Sethi : Began Anthyesti Funeral Services to provide end-to-end funeral management service.
      • Tana Sumpaaged : Successfully running piggery farms and fisheries and helping local people, women, housewives and unemployed youth with quality training and livelihood support.
      • Mahipal Chary Kadivendi : Developed a self-propelled weeder-cum-cultivator that can be used for a number of agricultural processes such as hoeing, weeding, tilling, sowing and also for applying fertilizer or insecticides.
