International Current Affairs
  • Today (4th January) is World Braille Day.
    • This day celebrates the 210th Birth Anniversary of French Innovator Louis Braille.
    • Louis Braille was a French educator and inventor of a system of reading and writing for use by the visually impaired.
    • His system remains known worldwide simply as braille.
  • Myanmar is celebrating 71st Independence Day today.

  • Pakistan has announced that it is going to withdraw the facility of on-arrival visas for Afghan Nationals
    • Now the Afghan Nationals are required to apply for a visa from Pakistani missions in Afghanistan.
    • The country cited security risks and the spike in terror attacks as the reasons for the withdrawal.
National Current Affairs
  • Union Minister Prakash Javadekar will inaugurate the 27th edition New Delhi World Book Fair at the Pragati Maidan on 5th January 2019. 
    • Theme of 27th New Delhi World Book Fair : “Readers with special needs”.
    • The UAE’s third largest emirate Sharjah is the guest of honour for the New Delhi World Book Fair.
  • The Indian Parliament today passed the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2018 that seeks to do away with the no-detention policy in schools.
    • The key aim behind the move is to rebuild the education system of the country, which is at present broken.
  • The Parliament has given its approval to the National Council for Teacher Education (Amendment) Bill, 2018
    • This bill aims to protect the interest of the students who had completed courses from unrecognized institutes.
  • The Supreme Court today revived the class-action suit by the Central government against Nestle India saying, "Why should we eat noodles having lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG) ?".
    • Nestle had argued that toxic lead content in Maggi noodles was within 'permissible limits'.
  • The Odisha government has put seven districts on alert in view of cyclonic storm 'Pabuk', formed over South China Sea. 
    • The cyclonic storm is expected to cross Andaman Island on January 6 and Myanmar coast on January 7-8.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)'s second Moon mission, Chandrayaan-2, which was scheduled to launch on Thursday, has been delayed for the third time in a row.
    • The new launch dates are not yet confirmed. 
    • The ₹800-crore mission was earlier delayed in December 2016 and again in October 2018.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • According to a recently released report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Indian banking sector witnessed an over 50% hike in cyber frauds in the financial year 2017-18. 
    • Banks collectively lost nearly ₹110 crore to cyber frauds, which amounted to less than 0.5% of the total money lost to frauds in 2017-18.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Union cabinet has approved the setting up of a high-level committee for the implementation of clause 6 of the Assam Accord
    • After Assam agitation of 1979-1985, Assam Accord was signed on 15th August, 1985
    • Clause 6 of the Assam Accord envisaged that appropriate constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards, shall be provided to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.
    • The committee is formed to address the sense of feeling that clause 6 has not been fully implemented even almost 35 years after the accord was signed.
People in News
  • 23 years after leaving a refugee camp in Kenya, Ilhan Omar today became the 1st woman to wear a hijab in the US Congress
    • There had been a 181-year ban on headwear of any type in the chamber, but rules were changed to allow Omar to wear a religious head covering on the floor of the House.
Deaths
  • Former Bombay high court Justice Chandrashekhar Shankar Dharmadhikari (91), who delivered a landmark verdict during the Emergency on human rights,  passed away. 
    • A Padma Bhushan recipient, he delivered a landmark judgment as he held that Right to Life is natural and a human right and a citizen can approach the court even during Emergency. 
    • Accordingly, he released all those against whom there was no evidence.
Awards & Honors
  • US based Kathak exponent Anindita Neogy Anaam has been honoured with the prestigious National Nritya Shiromani Award for her contribution towards preserving and promoting the dance form across the world. 
    • The award was conferred on her in Cuttack on the opening day of the 10th Cuttack Mahotsav: International Dance and Music festival.
    • Anindita Anaam is a recipient of prestigious national awards like Jayadev Rashtriya Puraskar and Bidagdha Nartaki Samman for her outstanding achievement in the preservation and promotion of Indian art in India and abroad.
