International Current Affairs
  • US president Donald Trump today signed the ‘Asia Reassurance Initiative Act’. 
    • This law aims at countering the encroaching influence and growing threat from China, and to reinvigorate U.S. leadership in Asia.
  • Japan has announced that it is going to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC)
    • The withdrawal would enable Japan to resume commercial whaling activities.
National Current Affairs
  • Days before Kumbh Mela, the Union Home Ministry has approved the Uttar Pradesh government’s proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj
    • A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the MHA will now ensure that names of other institutes in the district, including railway station, High Court and university, are also changed. 
    • Note : In October last year, the Yogi Adityanath-led government had proposed the change in name of Allahabad to Prayagraj.
  • The government has introduced the Aadhaar amendment bill in Loksabha today. 
    • This bill aims to provide legal backing for voluntary seeding of biometric Aadhaar ID for mobile SIM card and bank account authentication purposes.
    • The bill also gives minors an option to opt out of Aadhaar scheme upon turning 18 years. 
    • It further provides for penalties of up to ₹1 crore for violating provisions of Aadhaar Act.
  • An ambitious web-based single-window system titled Parivesh (Pro-Active and Responsive facilitation by Interactive, Virtuous and Environmental Single-window Hub) for environmental clearances will be rolled-out at state levels by January 15.  
    • Parivesh is a web-based workflow application which has been developed for online submission and monitoring of the proposals submitted by the proponents for seeking Environment, Forest, Wildlife and CRZ Clearances from Central, State and district level authorities.
    • Parivesh provides for an automated system for submission, clearance and monitoring
    • Parivesh is expected to bring an end to the clearance nightmare for entrepreneurs. 
  • To address the farm distress in the state, the government of West Bengal has announced the Krishak Bandhu scheme.
    • The scheme bears similarity to the Telengana government’s flagship ‘Rythu Bandhu Schemein terms of providing financial assistance to farmers and landless labourers.
    • Against the Telegana government’s promised ₹8,000 an acre, the West Bengal government will give an annual financial assistance (cash dole) of ₹5,000 per acre in two instalments – one during kharif and another during rabi – for a single crop. 
    • The scheme also provides for a life insurance cover of Rs 2,00,000 in case of death, irrespective of the cause, of an earning family member (farmer) aged between 18 and 60 years. 
Recent Committees in News
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today set up an expert committee to suggest long-term solutions for the economic and financial sustainability of the MSME sector
    • MSMEs : Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises
    • The eight-member committee will also examine factors affecting the availability of finance to MSMEs. 
    • This comes after RBI allowed one-time restructuring of MSME loans of up to ₹25 crore.
    • Head of this Committee : U K Sinha  (Former Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India)
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched Survey on Retail Payment Habits of Individuals (SRPHi)
    • The Survey will capture payment habits of individuals in 6 cities, including four metropolitan towns. 
    • The survey will cover a sample of 6,000 individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds across six cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Guwahati.
  • To raise loans from Chinese capital markets, the government of Pakistan is going to launch Panda Bonds
    • The interest rates and the size of the bonds would be decided at a later stage.
    • China is Pakistan’s largest trading partner. 
    • Pakistan has the highest trade deficit with China. 
    • The raising of capital in Chinese currency will aid Pakistan to bridge the deficit.
    • Panda Bonds will help Pakistan to diversify the investor base of capital market issuance and provide a source of raising Renminbi (official currency of the People's Republic of China).
  • The Uttar Pradesh cabinet today cleared a policy for implementation of a 0.5% cow welfare cess or 'gau kalyan' cess
    • This would help the state earn additional ₹34 crore for constructing and maintaining cattle shelters to accommodate at least 1,000 stray cattle per district.
Science & Technology
  • The China National Space Administration's (CNSA) robotic probe, Chang'e 4 has become the 1st ever to land on face of the Moon not seen from the Earth. 
    • The mission aims to take detailed measurements of the Moon's terrain and mineral composition.
  • The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), K Sivan has announced that the organisation is going to launch 32 space missions in 2019. 
    • The planned missions include Chandrayaan-2, the ₹800-crore mission to land on Moon with lander and rover. 
    • India's 1st human space mission in 2021-22, Gaganyaan, will also be pursued this year.

  • Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as the 38th President of Brazil in a ceremony at Brazil’s National Congress Building.
    • He is a former Army captain and admirer of the country’s 1964-1985 military dictatorship.

  • General Manager of South Central Railway, Vinod Kumar Yadav, has been appointed as Chairman of Railway Board and ex-officio Principal Secretary to Government of India (GoI).
    • Yadav belongs to the 1980 batch of Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE).
    • His appointment came after Ashwani Lohani’s superannuation. 
  • Saurabh Kumar has been appointed as the Director General of Ordnance Factories (DGOF) and Chairman of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in Kolkata.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has nominated Justice AK Sikri as Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA)
    • He is going to replace Justice Madan B Lokur.
