International Current Affairs
  • UK Prime Minister Theresa May today won the no-confidence vote tabled by Opposition and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn by 325 to 306. 
    • Note : This is the second no-confidence vote won by May in over a month, the first being tabled by her own Conservative Party members.
  • The world’s first television channel dedicated to human rights was launched in London with a promise to deliver hidden stories ignored by mainstream media into people’s living rooms.
    • This web-based channel would bring human rights issues to audiences in over 20 countries across Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
    • This channel was launched by the International Observatory of Human Rights (IOHR).
National Current Affairs
  • PM Modi inaugurates Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences & Research in Ahmedabad. 
    • This is a state of art, super-speciality public hospital built by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and is equipped with all modern amenities, including an air ambulance.
  • Microsoft Co-founder and the world's second richest person, Bill Gates today praised National Health Protection Scheme (Ayushman Bharat scheme) on completing 100 days of its launch. 
    • The free healthcare scheme recorded 6,85,000 beneficiaries in the first 100 days.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) in Mumbai on Saturday. 
    • The state-of-the-art Museum has been built at a cost of over 140 crore rupees.
    • Objective of NMIC : To take its visitors through an absorbing journey of over a century of Indian cinema in a story telling mode with the help of visuals, graphics, artifacts, interactive exhibits and multimedia expositions.
  • Congress leader Shashi Tharoor today introduced a Private member's bill that seeks to regulate online gaming
    • The bill aims to legitimise online games of skill and allow online gaming websites to apply for licenses to earn revenue. 
Science & Technology
  • Minister of State in Department of Space Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated UNNATI programme of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru today.
    • UNNATI is an acronym for Unispace Nanosatellite Assembly and Training.
    • This is a programme launched by ISRO as part of initiative by United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs that is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The government today decided to recapitalise state-owned Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) to the tune of ₹6,000 crore
    • It also approved an increase in the authorised capital of the bank from ₹10,000 crore to ₹20,000 crore. 
  • The Union Cabinet has approved ₹4,241.97 crore for next-generation "Integrated E-filing and Centralised Processing Centre 2.0 Project of the Income Tax Department". 
    • Indian multinational corporation and a global leader in technology services & consulting,  Infosys has been selected to implement the project.
    • Aim of this Project : To cut down the processing time for Income Tax Returns from 63 days to one day.
  • India's Ambassador to the US Harsh Vardhan Shringla today announced that India will purchase $5 billion worth of oil and gas from the United States every year. 
    • India will also buy $18 billion worth of defence equipment.
  • Bank unions including All India Bank Officers' Confederation have filed a petition in the Delhi High Court challenging the proposed merger of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank
    • The decision-making process behind the merger is a "blatant circumvention and disregard for statutory procedures", the unions claimed. 
    • The merger was not a voluntary or an autonomous decision, they added.
  • Union Minister for Commerce and Industries, Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the 10th edition of the India Rubber Expo - 2019 in Mumbai today. 
    • The India Rubber Expo is Asia's largest rubber expo, which offers a unique opportunity for Indian companies to meet and collaborate with overseas companies.
Recent Committees in News
  • The government constituted an 8-membered GST ministerial panel to suggest whether a uniform tax rate should be imposed on lotteries or the current differential tax rate system be continued.
    • Currently, a state-organised lottery attracts 12 percent GST while a state-authorised lottery attracts 28 percent tax.
    • Head of this Panel : Sudhir Mungantiwar (Maharashtra Finance Minister)
  • Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed a Presidential Commission of Inquiry today to investigate into allegations of corruption and malpractices that had taken place from 15th January 2015 to 31st December 2018.
    • The commission will look into public complaints, information and conduct prompt, impartial, comprehensive investigations against persons who had held or continue to hold political office and those who have been or continue to serve as public servants and officers of statutory bodies.

Deaths
  • John Bogle (89), the Founder of Vanguard Group who popularised low-cost index funds passed away. 
    • Note : Vanguard is now the world's biggest mutual fund firm with around $5 trillion in assets under management. 
  • Former Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) chief Vishnu Hari Dalmia (91) passed away.
    • Along with VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Giriraj Kishore, Dalmia played a key role in Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
New Appointments
  • Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, and Justice Sanjiv Khanna of the Delhi High Court were elevated to the Supreme Court today amid questions over the appointments by the legal fraternity. 
    • The recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium was signed off this evening by President Ram Nath Kovind and the two judges are likely to take oath tomorrow. 
    • Note : Justice Khanna is likely to be the Chief Justice of India in 2024.
  • US President Donald Trump has nominated 3 Indian-Americans to key positions in his administration. 
    • Dr Rita Baranwal has been nominated for the post of Assistant Secretary of Energy (Nuclear Energy).
    • Bimal Patel has been nominated as the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury
    • Aditya Bamzai has been nominated to be a Member of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board.
