International Current Affairs
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today left for Uzbekistan on a 2-day visit. 
    • During this visit, she will participate in the 1st India-Central Asia Dialogue in Samarkand which  she will co-chair with Uzbekistan's Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov.
    • The Foreign Minister of Afghanistan will participate in the Dialogue as a special invitee for the session dedicated to connectivity issues in the region.
    •  Foreign Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan and the First Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan will also participate in the dialogue.
  • Nepal's Army Chief Purna Chandra Thapa arrived in New Delhi today on a 4-day official visit.
    • It is his 1st official bilateral visit after taking over the command of the Nepal Army.
    • The visit symbolizes the deep-rooted ties between the two armies and will help strengthen defence cooperation.
    • He will be conferred with the Honorary Rank of ‘General of Indian Army’ by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
National Current Affairs
  • The Armed Forces will  celebrate the Veterans Day on 14th January 2019. 
    • The objective of this day is to honour the veterans of the Army, Navy and Air Force
    • To mark the occasion, veterans' rallies will be held country wide at Armed Forces stations. 
    • About Veterans Day :
      • January 14 is celebrated as ‘Veterans Day’ as a mark of respect, recognition and service rendered by Field Marshal K M Carriapa OBE, the 1st Indian Commander in Chief of the Indian Army, who retired on this day in 1953.
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu today doubled the amount for pensioners in the state from ₹1,000 per month to ₹2,000
    • Around 5.4 lakh pensioners will be benefited from the decision which will be effective from January. 
  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the 25th edition of Partnership Summit 2019 in Mumbai today.
    • The summit is expected to build new partnerships and explore investment opportunities in sectors like Artificial Intelligence, big data, food processing, defense, aeronautics, renewable energy and tourism.
    • Governor of Maharashtra C. Vidyasagar Rao and Union Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion. 
    • Theme of the Summit : New India Rising to Global Occasions
  • Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Col Rajyavardhan Rathore today launched the National Youth Parliament Festival 2019 at a function in New Delhi. 
    • The festival will continue till 24th of next month.
    • Theme of the festival : Be the Voice of New India and Find solutions and contribute to policy
  • In Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj is gearing up for the Kumbh Mela
    • The Mela will commence from Tuesday and will continue till the 4th of March. 
  • Prime Minister Narender Modi will release a commemorative coin on Guru Govind Singh Ji in New Delhi tomorrow.
    • The event marks the birth anniversary of the Guru.

  • Tulsi Gabbard, the 1st-ever Hindu elected to the US Congress, has announced that she will run for President in 2020. 
    • Gabbard is an Iraq war veteran and the first Hindu and first Samoan-American elected to the US Congress. 
    • She is currently serving as the US Representative from the state of Hawaii and is a member of the Democratic Party.
  • Ashok Chawla today resigned as the Chairman of National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), India's biggest stock exchange. 
    • This comes after the CBI informed a Delhi court that it has obtained sanction from the respective ministry to file charges against him and four other former bureaucrats in the Aircel-Maxis case. 
    • Note : Chawla also recently resigned as Yes Bank's Non-Executive Chairman.

  • Nobel Peace Prize winner and Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai is coming up with a new book titled "We are Displaced".
    • In this new book she is charting her experiences travelling the world and visiting refugee camps.
  • Vice-Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh launched a book titled ‘A Crusade against corruption’. 
    • This book has been authored by Manohar Manoj. 
    • Manoj has written this book after massive research and deep observations on the subject during the last 15 years and claimed that this is a kind of ‘Encyclopedic Snapshots on Corruption in India’.
Deaths
  • Veteran actor Kishore Pradhan (86), who is known for his work in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, passed away.
    • Kishore acted in several Marathi films and over 100 plays during the course of his career.
    • The actor featured in Kareena Kapoor starrer 'Jab We Met', as well as in 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai', starring Sanjay Dutt.
  • Banker-turned-politician Meera Sanyal (57) passed away.
    • Sanyal had joined the Aam Aadmi Party after quitting her job as the CEO of Royal Bank of Scotland in India. 
Recent Committees in News
  • Market regulator Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has constituted a "Research Advisory" committee which will assist in formulating policy to undertake research relevant for development and regulation of capital markets.
    • The committee would comprise prominent financial economists and market practitioners. 
    • Head of this Committee : Sankar De.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Australia defeated India by 34 runs in the first ODI today to become the 1st country to win 1,000 international matches
    • Chasing 289, India lost their first three wickets for four runs, their joint-lowest score at three-down in ODI history. India's Rohit Sharma slammed his 22nd ODI hundred, while Shikhar Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu got out for a duck each.
  • India's first Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan today made a full-time switch to sports car racing, ending his around two-decade-old single-seater racing career. 
    • Karthikeyan, who has secured a spot in Japan's Super GT series, will be competing with the likes of former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button. 
  • Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah was conferred with the 2018 Confederation of African Football Player of the Year Award, for the second time, in Senegal. 
    • He also won the BBC African Footballer of the Year award for the second time. 
  • Indian captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri received the honorary membership of the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) ahead of the India-Australia ODI series. 
    • Kohli and Shastri will hence join the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara of the West Indies to have received the honorary membership of the Sydney Cricket Ground.
