International Current Affairs
- Japan has retained its top spot as the world's most powerful passport this year, with its citizens able to enter 190 countries without requiring a visa, according to the Henley Passport Index.
- India's passport was ranked 79th, having visa-free access to 61 destinations.
- UK based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released the Democracy Index 2019 which ranks 167 countries by 60 indicators across five broad categories.
- The index classifies each country either as a full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime or authoritarian.
- According to this Index :
- India was at the 41st place with a score of 7.23/10 and was placed in the flawed democracies category.
- Australia and New Zealand are the only “full democracies” in the entire Asia-Pacific region
- 8 countries (Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Timor-Leste, Ethiopia, North Korea, Laos, Nepal and Sri Lanka) which have the word “democratic in full titles were not fully democratic.
- Only 4.5% of the world’s people live in a full democracy.

National Current Affairs
- Today (10th January) is World Hindi Day.
- The day is commemorated every year with the objective to promote use of Hindi language abroad.
- The first World Hindi Conference was organized on 10 January 2006 in Nagpur and since then every 10 January is observed as the World Hindi Day.
- At present Hindi as a language is spoken in more than 20 countries around the world and is being taught in 150 Universities of the world.
- Important Note :
- World Hindi Day and Hindi day are different.
- Hindi Day is celebrated on September 14.
- The Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi as the Official Language of the Union on this day (14 September) in the year 1949.
- A day after Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha today passed the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2019 (124th) to introduce a 10% reservation for economically weaker sections among general category for jobs and educational institutions.
- The government today launched Web- Wonder Women Campaign to celebrate the exceptional achievements of women who have influenced and impacted society through social media.
- The Campaign aims to recognize the fortitude of Indian women stalwarts from across the globe who have used the power of social media to run positive campaigns to steer a change in society.
- The Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Gangajal Project, which will provide Agra with better and more assured water supply, at an estimated cost of Rs.2880 crores.
- Gangajal project aims to bring 140 cusecs of Ganga water to Agra. This will help meet the drinking water demands in the city.
- Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu today inaugurated a single-lane steel cable suspension bridge in Upper Siang district, likely to benefit more than 20,000 people on both sides of Siang river.
- The 300-metre-long Byorung Bridge will also "bolster defense preparedness" in the state.
- The bridge, built at the cost of Rs 48.43 crore, will reduce distance between Yingkiong and Tuting by almost 40 km.
Awards & Honors
- For the 1st time in 30 years, the 2019 Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, will be held without a hos.
- Hollywood comedian Kevin Hart, who was supposed to be this year's host, stepped down following criticism over his old homophobic tweets.
- Note : The 91st Academy Awards will be held on February 24.
- Veteran journalist Dinu Randive has been conferred with the lifetime achievement award by the Mantralaya and Vidhimandal Vartahar Sangh, an association of journalists covering Maharashtra legislature and secretariat.
- Mr Randive started his journalistic career in 1956.
- He also participated in the freedom struggle, the Sanyukta Maharashtra movement and the Goa liberation movement.
- Award winners in other categories included Vishwas Waghmode, Mahesh Tiwari and Prajakta Pol.

- Justice UU Lalit, one of the 5 judges of the Supreme Court that was to hear the Ayodhya case, opted out of the Constitution bench today.
- This comes after a lawyer pointed out he had appeared as a lawyer for one of the parties nearly two decades ago.

New Appointments
- Pranav R Mehta has been appointed as the President of the Global Solar Council.
- With this he has become the 1st Indian to head the Global Solar Council.
- Currently he is working as the President of the National Solar Energy Federation of India.
- 1985 batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre Kumar Rajesh Chandra has been appointed as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
Deaths
- Ohio based Lessie Brown (114), who was believed to be the oldest person in the US, passed away.
- Brown became the oldest person in the US following the death of 114-year-old Delphine Gibson on May 9, 2018.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The government has allowed Iran's Bank Pasargad to open a branch in Mumbai while India's state-owned UCO Bank will be opening a branch in Iran.
- The move is expected to facilitate transactions related to India's oil purchases from Iran amidst US sanctions.
- The banks will also handle transactions relating to operation at Iran's Chabahar Port which India is developing.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has agreed to provide $400 million to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) under the SAARC swap facility.
- Note : CBSL has requested a further bilateral swap arrangement of $1 billion from RBI which is "under consideration".
- US-based Boeing has retained its position as the world's largest planemaker for the 7th year in a row, delivering a record 806 aircraft in 2018.
- Sikkim will be the 1st state to roll out Universal Basic Income (UBI) and has started the process to introduce the unconditional direct cash transfer scheme.
- To make card transactions more secure, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has permitted card networks to offer Tokenisation services to any token requestor (a third-party app provider).
- Tokenisation involves the creation of a unique alternative code or 'token' that will mask sensitive card details.
- A cardholder may use these services by registering the card on the token requestor’s app after giving explicit consent.
- The Last Budget session of the Parliament before the General elections will be held from 31st January to 13th February 2019.
- Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the Interim Budget for 2019-20 fiscal on 1st February 2019.
- Note : This will be the 6th consecutive budget to be presented by Jaitley.
