International Current Affairs
  • Today (10th December) is Human Rights Day.
    • On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and ever since, Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. 
    • This year (2018) marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was the first global enunciation of human rights and a milestone proclamation of the new United Nations. 
    • The proclamation, which is a document translated in more than 500 languages in the world states that everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being — regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
    • Theme of Human Rights Day 2018 : “Stand Up For Human Rights”.
  • The 2nd edition of service specific exercise AVIAINDRA between Indian Air Force and Russian Federation Aerospace Force (RFSAF) was held at Air Force Station Jodhpur, Rajasthan. 
    • The inaugural IAF-RFSAF Ex AVIAINDRA was conducted in 2014 and since then it is conducted bi-annually (twice a year) in both countries.
    • Aim of AVIAINDRA : Anti-terrorist operations in bi-lateral scenario. 
  • Western European country Luxembourg is set to become the 1st country in the world to make all its public transport free
    • Fares on trains, trams and buses will be lifted next summer under the plans of the re-elected coalition government led by Xavier Bettel, who was sworn in for a second term as prime minister recently.

  • The 10th edition of INDRA NAVY maritime exercise between India and Russia is being held at Visakhapatnam coast, Andhra Pradesh from December 9-16, 2018. 
    • Aim of INDRA NAVY Exercise : To increase interoperability amongst the two navies, develop common understanding and procedures for maritime security operations.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind will be on a 4-day visit to Myanmar from today. 
    • During his stay, he will visit capital Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon, and interact with his counterpart U Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. 
    • A high-level delegation is also accompanying Mr Kovind.
    • Through this visit, the President will reaffirm India’s commitment to developing an important partnership with Myanmar.

National Current Affairs
  • Indian Railways flagged off the new Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train from New Delhi's Safdarjung Railway Station today. 
    • The train will cover destinations associated with Lord Buddha's life, including Bodh Gaya, Varanasi, Lumbini, and will end with a tour of the Taj Mahal.
  • Union Cabinet has approved implementation of Shahpurkandi Dam Project on river Ravi (Punjab). 
    • The total cost of this project is Rs. 1973.53 crore (Irrigation component: 564.63 cr, Power component: 1408.90 cr.) Out of this, Rs 485.38 cr would be provided as Central Assistance.
  • The Cabinet also approved launching of National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS). 
    •  It will be implemented by Department of Science &Technology under Ministry of Science and Technology for period of five years. 
    • Objective of NM-ICPS : To addresses ever increasing technological requirements of the society.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • To encourage 'Make in India' and promote local goods and services, the government has mandated preference to be given to domestically-manufactured vehicles with minimum 65% local content in public procurement of automobiles. 
    • This applies to automobiles based on internal combustion engines including two- and three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles.
  • The World Bank has announced that India will retain its position as the world’s top recipient of remittances this year with $80 billion
    • India is followed by China, Mexico, the Philippines and Egypt.
    • Note A foreign remittance is money transferred from a foreign worker to their family or other individuals in their home countries.
  • Flipkart-owned Myntra's CEO Ananth Narayanan has resigned from his role with his position set to be abolished.
    • The move comes weeks after Flipkart Group CEO Binny Bansal resigned after allegations of "serious personal misconduct".
Awards & Honors
  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India has been conferred the Skoch Award for National Significance at an event held in New Delhi. 
    • The award was received by Secretary, Ministry of New Renewable Energy, Anand Kumar.
    • The award has been conferred on the Ministry considering its purpose and critical role played in installing about 73 GW renewable energy capacity in the country.
New Appointments
  • Axis Bank has inducted Amitabh Chaudhry as additional director on its board, three weeks ahead of his taking over as the new Managing Director and CEO of the private sector lender. 
    • The board also approved the reappointment of Samir Barua, Som Mittal and Rohit Bhagat as independent directors.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore today launched the jersey for the 2nd  edition of Khelo India, rechristened as Khelo India Youth Games 2018.
    • These games will kick-start from 9th to 20th January 2019 in Pune.
    • Scheduled to take place at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune, the Games will see over 10,000 participants from 29 states and seven Union Territories taking part in the two age categories — under 17 and under 21.
  • Virat Kohli has become the 1st Asian captain to win Tests in England, Australia and South Africa after leading India to a 31-run victory over Australia in Adelaide today. 
    • Kohli has now led India to 25 victories in 43 Tests. 
    • Note : India became the 1st Asian team to win Tests in the three countries in a calendar year.
