- Choke - unable to breath
- Smog - polluted air that is a mixture of smoke and fog
- Corrective - something that corrects a mistake or improves a bad situation
- Lethal - very dangerous and able to kill you
- Soot - a dirty black powder that is produced when you burn something such as coal or wood
- Particulates - extremely small particles of a substance or substances, especially those that cause air pollution
- Residue - the part of something that remains after the rest has gone or ended
- Pollutant - a substance that is harmful to the environment
- Aggravate - to make something bad become worse, especially a situation or a medical condition
- Exhaust - the waste gas from an engine, especially a car's, or the pipe the gas flows through
- Consistent - not changing in behaviour, attitudes, or qualities

- Severe - a severe problem is very serious and worrying
- Prevailing - existing at a particular time or in a particular place
- Compel - to force someone to do something, or to get something from someone using force
- Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
- Dramatically - in a sudden and surprising way that is easy to notice
- Emission - a substance, especially a gas, that goes into the air
- Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
- Sustainable - capable of continuing for a long time at the same level
- Inflict - to cause something unpleasant to happen
- Degradation - the process of changing into a worse condition
- Premature - happening too soon or before the usual time
- Mortality - the number of deaths within a particular area, group etc
- Trauma - a bad experience that makes you feel very upset, afraid, or shocked
- Harvester - a machine or person that harvests crops
- Harvest - the activity of collecting a crop
- Innovative - new, original, and advanced
- Biofuel - fuel that is made from living things or from something their bodies produce, for example fuel made from cow manure
- Fertilizer - a natural or chemical substance added to soil in order to help plants grow
- Orient - to have a particular emphasis or aim
- Prioritise - to decide in what order you should do things, based on how important or urgent they are
- Keen - wanting to do something, or wanting other people to do something
- Enhance - to improve something, or to make it more attractive or more valuable
- Portfolio - a collection of investments that are owned by a particular person or organization
- Avenue - one of the methods you can use to achieve something
- Escalate - to become much worse or more serious, or to make something do this
- Deterrent - something that makes people decide not to do something by making them realize that something unpleasant could happen to them

- Merely - used for emphasizing that something is not as bad, severe, or important as someone thinks it is
- Mirror - to represent or show something honestly
- Waning - if a feeling or power wanes, it becomes weaker or less important
- Conservative - someone who is not willing to accept much change, especially in the traditional values of society
- Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
- Refugee - someone who leaves their country, especially during a war or other threatening event
- Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
- Forge - to develop a successful relationship, especially in business or politics, with another country, organization, or person
- Hardliner - someone, especially in politics, who is very severe, for example in refusing to allow something or to reduce or change their demands in any way
- Drubbing - a defeat in which someone loses very easily
- Conversely - used for introducing a sentence, or part of a sentence, which says something that is the opposite of the other part
- Cohabitation - the state or fact of living or existing at the same time or in the same place
- Exacting - needing a lot of skill and care
- Uneasy - an uneasy situation is not settled or calm, and it could quickly change and get worse
- Turn the tide - to change a situation, especially so that you begin to win instead of losing
- Migration - movement from one region to another and often back again
- Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
- Refugee - someone who leaves their country, especially during a war or other threatening event
- Seize upon - to use something in an enthusiastic way in order to gain an advantage
- Eurosceptic - someone, especially a politician, who thinks that their country should not be part of the European Union
- Populist - representing the interests and opinions of ordinary people
- Rhetoric - a style of speaking or writing that is intended to influence people
- Backing - support, help, or active approval
- Eurozone - the group of European Union states that use the euro as their official currency
- Bailout - money that someone gives or lends to a person or organization with financial problems
- Masses - a large quantity or number
- Bolster - to make something stronger or more effective
- Lenient - if a person or system is lenient, they punish someone less severely than they could
- Inroads - direct and noticeable effects on something
- Fringe - people or activities that are considered strange or extreme
- Emergence - the process of appearing or becoming recognized
- Formidable - very impressive in size, power, or skill and therefore deserving respect and often difficult to deal with
- Mainstream - considered ordinary or normal and accepted or used by most people
- Paradoxically - used for saying that something is strange because it is the opposite of what you expect
- Shaky - likely to fail or be unsuccessful
- Consensus - agreement among all the people involved
- Implication - a possible effect or result
- Unfolding - to happen, or to develop
- Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another
- Immense - extremely large
- Integration - the process of becoming a full member of a group or society, and becoming involved completely in its activities
- Pointer - something that shows the development or progress of a situation
