International Current Affairs
  • As per the draft agreement reached between Britain and the European Union (EU) on post-Brexit relations, the transition period of Brexit due to end in December 2020, can now be extended until 2022.
    • The draft agreement requires the endorsement of the remaining 27 EU member states. 
    • Brexit - Short form of British Exit. The exit (= act of leaving) by the United Kingdom from the European Union.
  • The 26th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) was recently at Palais des CongrĂ©s, Versailles, France.
    • CGPM is the highest international body of the world for accurate and precise measurements. 
    • The CGPM comprises 60 countries including India and 42 Associate Members. 
    • India was represented by :
      • Avinash K. Srivastava, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India
      • Dr. D. K. Aswal, Director, National Physical Laboratory(NPL), New Delhi 
      • Dr. T.D. Senguttuvan, Head Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, NPL.
    • This meeting was very special and historic as the members have voted for the redefinition of 130 years old “Le grand K – the SI unit of kg” in terms of the fundamental Planck’s constant (h).
National Current Affairs
  • Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurpurab and Kartik Purnima is being celebrated with religious fervour today. 
    • The day marks the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak, who laid the foundation of Sikhism. 
    • On this day, Sikh devotees around the world offer prayers. 
    • This year marks the 549th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.
  • To develop leadership capacities in women and make them vocal for their rights, the Uttar Pradesh Government recently launched Women Empowerment Resolution Campaign
    • This campaign was launched by Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister) in Lucknow.
    • Aim of Women Empowerment Resolution Campaign : To ensure the empowerment of women through different programs in the state.
    • Issues like education, self-employment, health, sanitation and nutrition will be included under this campaign.  
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for City Gas Distribution (CGD) projects across 129 districts.
    • This expansion of CGD network will benefit industrial and commercial units by ensuring the uninterrupted supply of natural gas.
    • It will also expand the potential coverage of CGDs to about 50 percent of the country’s population, spreading over 35 percent of the area.
    • Around 46.5 lakh households and 32 lakh CNG vehicles are currently availing the benefit of clean fuel through existing CGD networks.
  • The Andhra Pradesh state has finalised the design 250-metre-high assembly building, which will make it taller than the world's tallest statue, Gujarat's 'Statue of Unity' (182 meters), by 68 metres. 
    • The proposed structure is shaped like an upside-down lily flower consisting of three floors.
  • Andhra Pradesh state is also is building a world-class and India’s first ‘Justice City within its new capital Amaravati with the vision to provide a state-of-the-art ecosystem built on the latest technology for supporting the judicial system in the state. 
    • Once the Justice City is ready, Amaravati will be the 1st city in India to be home to the nation's first dedicated city on Justice.
  • The Himachal Pradesh government accorded its approval to implement Sashakt Mahila Yojna in the state with a vision to empower rural women by providing them an interface for organization and socio-economic development.
    • The scheme not only envisages to link rural women with sustainable livelihood opportunities but also to improve their skill by imparting training.
  • Union Cabinet has approved extension of term of Commission to examine issue of Sub-categorization of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Central List for six months beyond 30th November, 2018 and till 31st May 2019. 
    • This is fourth extension granted to commission for submission of its politically crucial report on creating quotas within quotas.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The government has approved to expand the scope of mandatory packaging norms under Jute Packaging Material (JPM) Act, 1987
    • It has approved that 100% of the food grains and 20% of sugar shall be mandatorily packed in diversified jute bags. 
    • Initially 10% of indents of jute bags for packing foodgrains will be placed through reverse auction on GEM portal.
Awards & Honors
  • Manipal Academy of Higher Education won the International Green Apple Award for evironmental best practice 2018 (Silver) at a ceremony held at the Houses of Parliament in London. 
    • The award was received by Derrick I. Joshua, Assistant Director, Environment Sustainability, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).
  • Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bachchan was awarded the 3rd Sayaji Ratna Award, established in the memory of erstwhile Baroda ruler Sayajirao Gaekwad III. 
    • The Baroda Management Association had, in 2013, instituted the award to mark the 150th birth anniversary of the ruler, known for undertaking major social reform measures during his rule in the early twentieth century.
  • Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro, has won Forbes India Leadership Awards 2018, Lifetime Achievement. 
    • The Forbes India Leadership Awards, India’s most prestigious honour for the top executives, was held in Mumbai.
  • National Academy of Sciences India (NASI) SCOPUS Young Scientist Awards 2018 Winners List :
    • Agriculture, Plant Sciences and Rural Development : Jitender Giri, National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi.
    • Biomedical Research and Healthcare : Maddika Subba Reddy, Group Leader and Staff Scientist- V, CDFD, Hyderabad.
    • Environmentally Sound Sustainable Development : Vimal Chandra Srivastava, Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee, Roorkee.
    • Innovation in Engineering and Physical Sciences : Ajay S. Karakoti, Associate Professor, Ahmedabad University, Ahmedabad.
    • Women in Science : Zhumur Ghosh, Bose Institute, Kolkata.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Veteran first-class cricketer Wasim Jaffer became the 1st Indian batsman to touch the 11,000-run figure in the Ranji Trophy.
    • The Vidharbha batsman achieved the milestone during the 3rd-round match against Baroda in Nagpur at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium, Nagpur, Maharashtra.
  • English Premier League side Chelsea's former striker Didier Drogba, who hails from the Ivory Coast, has announced his retirement from professional football. 
    • The 40-year-old scored 164 goals in 381 appearances over two spells with Chelsea, helping them win the Premier League four times and the Champions League in 2012. 
    • Drogba won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2006-07 and 2009-10.
