Irish author Anna Burns (56) has won this year's prestigious Man Booker Prize 2018 for her novel 'Milkman'. With this, she became the first Northern Irish author to win the Booker Prize. As winner, Burns received the award from Prince Charles' wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as 50,000 pounds ($65,900).

Anna was born in Belfast and raised in the working class Catholic district of Ardoyne. The 'Milkman' was her 3rd full-length novel. Her first novel was No Bones (published in the year 2001) and second novel was Little Constructions (published in 2007).

About the Book 'Milkman'

The experimental novel, 'Milkman' was published in 2018. This novel is about an 18-year-old girl, known as "middle sister", who is sexually harassed by an older paramilitary figure, called the "milkman". It is “incredibly original”, according to the Booker’s chair of judges, the philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah.

"It is a story of brutality, sexual encroachment and resistance threaded with mordant humour. Set in a society divided against itself, 'Milkman' explores the insidious forms oppression can take in everyday life."
