International Current Affairs
  • The Indian Navy today began the third edition of JIMEX, a 9-day bilateral maritime exercise with Japan, after a gap of five years. 
    • Aim of JIMEX : Improving understanding and imbibing the best practices of each other.
    • The exercise, being held in Visakhapatnam, shows an "upswing" in defence relations between the two nations.
  • US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are going to meet for a second summit between the two countries soon. 
    • The announcement came after US State Secretary Mike Pompeo and Kim Jong-un met in Pyongyang today. 
    • Note : Trump met Kim in Singapore in June for the first-ever summit between the two countries.

  • Indian Air Force celebrates its 86th anniversary today. 
    • The force was formed on 8th October 1932 with a strength of six RAF-trained officers and 19 air soldiers.

  • To provide financial assistance to the children of construction workers for their technical education in the state, the Odisha Government has launched a new scheme titled ‘Nirman Kusuma’ programme'
    • The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneshwar today.
  • The Union Government has decided to cover damages to crops in wild animal attacks under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna in select districts on an experimental basis. 
    • In this regard, Government has amended provisions of crop insurance scheme in consultation with various stakeholders after review of its working for the last two years.

  • Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sanctioned 5 new battalions of anti-riot and crowd control Rapid Action Force (RAF).
    • These new battalions will be stationed at :
      • Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh)
      • Hajipur (Bihar)
      • Jaipur (Rajasthan)
      • Mangalore (Karnataka) 
      • Nuh (Haryana)
    • With these, the total number of RAF battalions in the country has gone up to 15. 
    • Note : Varanasi will be fourth base of RAF in Uttar Pradesh- the three others being in Meerut, Allahabad and Aligarh.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • After foraying into India with its first store in Hyderabad, Swedish furniture giant IKEA is going to open its second store in Mumbai later this year.
    • Note : IKEA will invest nearly ₹3,000 crore in the next three years to open three warehouses in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi.

  • The government is probing the Competition Act 2002 to check if the big discounts offered by online retailers like Amazon, Flipkart promote competition. 
    • In this regard, the government has appointed 10-member panel.
    • Head of this Panel : Injeti Srinivas (corporate affairs secretary)
  • Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has reconstituted Supreme Court-empowered Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA).
    • This comes after tenure of the last EPCA expired on October 3, 2018.
    • Chairman of reconstituted EPCA : Bhure Lal (Former IAS officer)
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the UN Environment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development.
    • The MoU aims to cover all major interest common areas of both CII and UN Environment. 
    • It also aims to provide framework of cooperation and facilitate cooperation in areas including environment, renewable energy, climate change, resource conservation and management, energy efficiency, water sanitation, smart cities and urban infrastructure.
Awards & Honors
  • American economists William D Nordhaus and Paul M Romer were awarded the 50th Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (also known as Nobel Prize in Economics) for the year 2018.
    • While William was recognised for his work on climate economics, Romer was awarded for his work on endogenous growth theory. They will share a $1-million cash prize.
  • The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has won the ‘ISSA Good Practice Award’ for Administrative Solution for Coverage Extension at the “Regional Social Security Forum for Asia and the Pacific” held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India, who had won the Under-19 World Cup in February this year, defeated Sri Lanka to win the Under-19 Asia Cup for a record-extending sixth time. 
    • This is the fourth time that India defeated Sri Lanka in the final to win the tournament.
