  • Disaster - something very bad that happens and causes a lot of damage or kills a lot of people
  • Avoidable - capable of being prevented
  • Tragedy - a very sad event that causes people to suffer or die
  • Spat - a short argument
  • Ghastly - shocking in a way that frightens or upsets you
  • Protocol -  a set of rules for the correct way to behave on formal occasions
  • Mass - a large quantity or number
  • Gathering - a group of people meeting together
  • Aftermath - the effects and results of something bad or important
  • Preventable - capable of being prevented
  • Carnage - a situation in which there is a lot of death and destruction
  • Spectator - someone who watches a public activity or event, especially a sports event
  • Crowding - to move to a particular place at the same time as a lot of other people
  • Effigy - a model of someone, especially one destroyed in a protest against them
  • Mowe down - to kill a lot of people quickly and violently
  • Frantic - done in a very urgent way
  • Agency - a government department, or an organization connected with a government, that deals with a particular subject
  • Deplorable - extremely bad and shocking
  • Exploit - to treat someone unfairly in order to get some benefit for yourself
  • Ensure - to make certain that something happens or is done
  • Organiser - someone who makes all the arrangements for an event or activity, especially as a job
  • Enforcement - the process of making sure that something happens, especially that people obey a law or rule
  • Machinery - an established system for doing something
  • On the other hand - in a way that is different from the first thing you mentioned
  • Claim - to say that something is true, even though there is no definite proof
  • Sought - to ask for something, or to try to get something

  • Inquiry - an official examination of a crime, accident, problem etc, in order to get information or the truth
  • Proximity - how near something is to another thing, especially in distance or time
  • Overshadow - to be a negative feature or influence that spoils something
  • Stampede - if a group of animals or people stampede, they all start to run in a very fast uncontrolled way because they are frightened or excited
  • Death toll - the number of people who are killed on a particular occasion
  • Horror - a very strong feeling of shock, fear or disgust caused by something extremely unpleasant
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
  • Empower - to give a person or organization the legal authority to do something
  • Accountable - in a position where people have the right to criticize you or ask you why something happened
  • Deficit - a lack of a quality, skill, or ability that you should have
  • Spectacular - an event or performance that is very exciting to watch and involves a lot of people
  • Incongruous - strange because of being very different to other things which happen or exist in the same situation
  • Populous - a populous nation, city, area etc has many people living in it
  • Trespass - to go into a place without the owner’s permission
  • Prime - main or most important
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Common - a large piece of open land in a village or town where anyone can walk, play sports etc
  • Vigorous - full of energy, enthusiasm, or determination
  • Hazard - something that could be dangerous or could cause damage or accidents
  • Barricade - a line or pile of objects put together, often quickly, to stop people from going where they want to go
  • Take root - if an idea, belief, or system takes root, it becomes established and accepted
  • Imbibe - if you imbibe ideas, feelings, or qualities, you experience them and are influenced by them

  • Remarkable - unusual in a way that surprises or impresses you
  • Transition - the process of changing from one situation, form, or state to another

  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together

  • Scandal - a situation in which important people behave in a dishonest or immoral way that shocks people
  • Tainted - something that is tainted is spoilt by an unpleasant feature or quality that often makes people not want to be involved with it
  • Veteran - someone who was in the armed forces, especially during a war
  • Unlikely - not likely to happen
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Nonagenarian - someone who is between 90 and 99 years old
  • Nemesis - someone or something that continues to oppose you and cannot easily be defeated
  • Collaboration - the process of working with someone to produce something
  • Assurance - a feeling or attitude of confidence
  • Protégé - a young person who receives help or training from an older experienced person
  • Reconciliation - a new and friendly relationship with someone who you argued with or fought with
  • Sack - to tell someone that they can no longer work at their job
  • Mentor - an experienced person who helps someone who has less experience, especially in their job
  • Imprison - to put someone in a prison (jail)
  • Allegedly  if someone allegedly does something, another person says that they have done it, even though this has not been proved
  • Trumped-up - deliberately made up in order to connect someone with a crime
  • Royal - relating to a king or queen or the members of their family
  • Pardon - to forgive someone for something they have said or done
  • Underpinning - an important basic part of something that allows it to succeed or continue to exist
  • Bonhomie - a friendly happy feeling
  • Reformist - wanting to change and improve society or an institution
  • Instinct - a natural tendency to behave in a particular way
  • Consolidate - to make the power, position, or achievements you already have stronger or more effective so that they are likely to continue
  • Middle-income - having an income that is not low and not high
  • Revelation - a surprising piece of information
  • Controversial - a controversial subject, opinion, or decision is one that people disagree about or do not approve of
  • Ouster - the removal of someone from an official position
  • Impetus - a force that helps something to happen or develop more quickly
  • Set aside - to not let a particular feeling, opinion, or belief influence you, in order to achieve something more important

  • Incompatibility - ideas, systems, or machines that are incompatible are not able to work or exist together because of basic differences

  • Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Conversely - used for introducing a sentence, or part of a sentence, which says something that is the opposite of the other part
  • Complementarity - the state of working usefully together
  • Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them
  • Underlie - to be the real or basic cause of or reason for something
  • Outlook - an idea about what a situation will be like in the future
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Curiously - in an unusual and interesting way
  • Turmoil - a state of excitement or uncontrolled activity
  • Potential - possible or likely in the future
  • Impose - to introduce something such as a new law or new system, and force people to accept it
