International Current Affairs
  • Today (15th October) is the International Day of Rural Women.
    • Aim of this Day : "To recognize the critical role and contribution of rural women".
    • Theme of International Day of Rural Women 2018 : “Sustainable infrastructure, services and social protection for gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls
  • Today (15th October) is Global Hand-washing Day.  
    • This is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
    • Theme of the Global Hand-washing Day 2018 : “Clean hands - a recipe for health
  • India is going to host the 1st India-United States tri-services exercise in 2019. 
    • This exercise will include all services of both countries and talks are on to include special forces.
    • Important Note : US is the second country after Russia with whom India conducts tri-services exercise.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 Summit in Argentina in November. 
    • This will be their 4th meeting this year after the Wuhan summit and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China, and BRICS summit in South Africa.

  • North and South Korea have agreed to begin reconnecting rail and road links that have been cut since the 1950-53 Korean War. 
    • Later this month, the two countries will discuss plans to co-host the 2032 Olympic Games.
  • India was ranked 103rd out of 119 qualifying countries in recently released Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2018.
    • India was ranked 100th in this list last year.
    • Belarus topped the index.

National Current Affairs
  • Today (15th October 2018) is World Student's Day.
    • This day marks the birthday of the 11th President of India  A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (15th October 1931 - 27th July 2015).
    • In 2015 the United Nations declared 15 October as "World Students' Day".
  • Delhi government has launched Chief Minister’s Urban Leaders Fellowship Programme that seeks to attract young leaders across the country to work with it on addressing some of the most pressing urban challenges. 
    • This programme was announced by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
    • Aim of this programme : To provide unique opportunity to young leaders across India to work within the Delhi government to address some of the most pressing urban challenges in India. 
    • Fellows selected under this programme will be assigned to work with ministers or senior officials across various departments Delhi government such as health, education, water, transport, art and culture. 
    • The fellows will be paid remuneration of Rs 1.25 lakh per month and Rs 75,000 per month to Associate Fellows.
  • The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has announced that soon passengers on board trains will be able to file a 'zero FIR' through an app which will be immediately investigated by the force. 
    • Note : Zero FIR means that an FIR can be filed in any police station.
  • The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board today approved enhancement of free accident insurance cover for pilgrims visiting the shrine to ₹5 lakh besides free treatment to trauma victims from nearby areas. The decision was reportedly taken at the 63rd meeting of the board under the chairmanship of Jammu and Kashmir Governor and the board's Chairman Satya Pal Malik.
  • The 46th edition of world’s largest IHGF-Delhi Fair is being held at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida. 
    • This fair was inaugurated by Union Minister of State (MoS) for Textiles Ajay Tamta
    • It was organized by Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH). 
Awards & Honors
  • Tova Ringer, a 93-year-old great-grandmother has been crowned 'Miss Holocaust Survivor 2018'. 
    • This in an annual Israeli beauty pageant designed to honour women who survived the Holocaust.
New Appointments
  • American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has announced the appointment of Sajeev Rajasekharan as Managing Director (MD) of the manufacturer's India operations. 
    • Under the new role, Rajasekharan will manage the company's leadership team, in-country sales, dealer network management, and marketing. 
  • Dr. Shekhar Mande has been appointed as the Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Research (DSIR)
    • He is going to replace Girish Sahni who superannuated in August 2018.
  • The High Commissioner of India to Kenya Suchitra Durai, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Thailand.
