International Current Affairs
  • Today (13th October) is International Day for Disaster Reduction.
    • This day celebrates the way that people and communities around the world reduce their exposure to disasters and raise awareness about the risks that they face.
    • Theme of International Day for Disaster Reduction 2018 : "Reducing the economic loss of disasters"
  • Today (second saturday of October) is World Migratory Bird Day.
    • Aim of this Day : Tto raise awareness about the need to protect migratory birds and their habitats.
    • India has a strategic role in the Central Asian Flyway, as it provides critical stopover sites to over 90% of the bird species known to use this migratory route
    • Theme of World Migratory Bird Day 2018 : "Unifying our Voices for Bird Conservation"
  • India today elected to the United Nations' top human rights body for a period of three years beginning January 1, 2019.
    • The 193-member UN General Assembly held elections for new members to the UN Human Rights Council. 
    • The 18 new members were elected by absolute majority through a secret ballot. 
    • Countries needed a minimum of 97 votes to get elected to the Council.
    • Note : India got 188 votes in the Asia-Pacific category, the highest number of votes among all candidates.
  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today visited a production facility of Dassault Aviation near Paris in France where the Rafale fighter jets are being manufactured. 
    • The delivery of the fighter jets is expected to begin from September 2019. 
      • Her France visit comes amidst Opposition's allegations of financial irregularities in the Rafale fighter jets deal.
  • The 32nd edition of India-Indonesia coordinated patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) is being held in Belawan, Indonesi.
    • Under it, ships and aircraft from both countries will undertake patrolling on respective sides of 236 nautical miles long International Maritime Boundary Line.
  • The World Economic Forum (WEF) has announced its new Centre for Fourth Industrial Revolution in India (Maharashtra).
    • It will be fourth center in chain-ones as part of WEF’s global network along with San Francisco (US), Tokyo (Japan) and Beijing (China) are already functioning.
  • Malaysia’s Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has agreed to abolish death penalty for all crimes and halt pending executions.
    • This decision was taken in pursuance of strong domestic opposition to colonial practice for being barbarous and unimaginably cruel which has put terrible stain on the country’s human rights record. 
National Current Affairs
  • Uttar Pradesh was perceived as the most corrupt state in India according to a survey titled India Corruption Survey 2018.
    • This survey was conducted by the Transparency International India in 15 states and Union Territories.
    • According to this survey, Gujarat, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh named as the least corrupt states.
    • Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Tamil Nadu named as the most corrupt states.
    • Important Points to Note :  
      • Transparency International India (TII) is a leading non-political, independent, non-governmental anti-corruption organisation of India. 
      • TII has extensive expertise and understanding of issues of corruption in India.
Awards & Honors
  • Stanford University was named as World’s Most Innovative University by Reuters news agency rankings. 
    • First published in 2015, this ranking recognises universities from across the world for their work in inventing new technologies, advance science and power new markets and industries.
    • No Indian University was able to make it to the list.

Deaths
  • Hindustani classical musician Annapurna Devi (91) passed away.
    • She was awarded India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, in 1977 for her contributions to the field of classical music. 
    • She was trained under her father Ustad Allauddin Khan and was married to Pandit Ravi Shankar for over two decades.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Union Cabinet has approved Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between India and Finland on Environmental Cooperation. 
    • The MoC will enable establishment and promotion of closer and long-term cooperation between two countries in field of environment protection and management of natural resources on basis of equity, reciprocity and mutual benefits. 
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Central University of Jammu (CUJ), for setting up of Satish Dhawan Center for Space Science in the University.  
    • Note : It will be first of its kind institute coming up in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India captain Virat Kohli has become the highest scoring Asian Test captain of all time, achieving the feat during his 45-run knock in the first innings of the second Windies Test today. 
    • Kohli has now scored 4,233 Test runs as captain, overtook ex-Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq's record of 4,214 runs. 
    • Overall, Kohli has scored 6,331 Test runs.
  • Arsenal's former World Cup-winning French player Thierry Henry has been named the head coach of French club AS Monaco, where Henry played from 1993 to 1999. 
  • India's Rio Paralympics medallist Deepa Malik bagged her second medal as she clinched a bronze medal in the women's F51/52/53 discus throw event at the Asian Para Games today. 
  • Indian sport shooter Manu Bhaker bagged a Silver medal after her Gold medal finish in 10m air pistol event at Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. 
    • With this, she became only the 2nd Indian after judoka Tababi Devi Thangjam to win two medals at the Youth Olympics.
