International Current Affairs
  • Today (30th September) is International Translation Day
    • The observance of this day seeks to recognize contribution of unsung heroes behind international diplomacy who work as language professionals to facilitate dialogue and contribute to development and strengthens world peace and security. 
    • Theme of International Translation Day 2018 : "Translation: promoting cultural heritage in changing times"
National Current Affairs
  • India celebrated the 2nd Anniversary of Surgical Strikes as Parakram Parv during 29th to 30th September 2018.
    • The Parakram Parv celebrations were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at ‘Combined Commanders’ Conference in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. 
    • Exhibition to highlight the valour and accomplishments of the Indian Army was also organised by Konark Corps at Jodhpur Military station.
  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has partnered with Google to launch Loo Review campaign on Google Map. 
    • The joint campaign has been launched under aegis of Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM–U). 
    • This campaign aims to encourage all local guides in India to rate and review public toilets on Google Maps.
Books & Authors
  • The Delhi High Court has restrained the publication and sale of a book titled 'Godman to Tycoon: The Untold Story of Baba Ramdev' till certain portions showing the yoga guru as an "ambitious villain" are removed.
    • The book has been authored by Priyanka Pathak Narain.
Awards & Honors
  • Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj today announced that an unexplored peak in the Himalayas will be named after late three-time PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee
    • A team of mountaineers will soon start an expedition to find that peak.
    • The idea to name it after Vajpayee came in view of his love for nature and mountains.
Recent Committees in News
  • The government has set up a Panel to review the Competition Act to ensure that the legislation is in line with the changing business environment. 
    • It will pay special attention to merger guidelines and cross-border competition issues. 
    • The committee will submit its report within three months.
    • The nine-member panel will be headed by Injeti Srinivas (Corporate Affairs Secretary).
  • The Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has also constituted a High Level Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility – 2018 (HLC-2018) under Chairmanship of Injeti Srinivas.
    • It will review existing framework and guide and formulate roadmap for coherent policy on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
  • Government has constituted 8-member search committee to recommend names for posts of Lokpal chairperson and members
    • The selection process of Lokpal is underway as per guidelines of laid down in Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013.
    • The committee will be headed by : Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (former Supreme Court judge)
Deaths
  • Former Ranji Trophy player Rajendra Shah (68) died after a brief illness.
    • A left-arm leg-spinner and useful middle-order batsman, Shah had played five Ranji Trophy matches for Saurashtra.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The board of state-run Vijaya Bank gave in-principle approval for merger with Bank of Baroda and Dena Bank
    • On 17th September 2018, the government proposed merging the banks to create India's 3rd largest lender after State Bank of India and the HDFC Bank.
    • After the merger of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank, the number of public sector banks will come down to 19.
  • To promote local handset production, the government has waived basic customs duty on 35 capital goods used for making mobile phone components.
    • Items such as motherboard coating machine, PCB assembly loader and unloader were exempted from the customs duty. 
    • These 35 goods are used for making components such as lithium-ion batteries, speakers, receivers and data cables, among others.
  • Union Government has enhanced its contribution in State Disaster Response fund (SDRF) from 75% to 90%.  
    • Now, Central government will contribute 90% and all States will contribute 10% to the SDRF. 
    • With this enhancement Central Government’s additional contribution in SDRF will be Rs. 1690.35 crore for the year 2018-19 and Rs. 1774.67 crore for the financial year 2019-20.
  • Pakistan hiked its key interest rate by 100 bps to a three-year high of 8.5%, citing rising inflation and concerns over large fiscal and current account deficits. 
    • The hike comes amid speculation that Pakistan may need another bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). 
    • The country's forex reserves plunged by a third this year to below $10 billion.
  • Russia today began delivering the S-300 surface-to-air missile system to Syria which will reach in two weeks.
    • Note : Russia approved the sale after its military jet was mistakenly shot down by Syria earlier this month. 
  • The Board of Directors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) today approved a $455-million loan for a road project in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh.
    • The project aims for construction and upgradation of more than 6,000 km of roads connecting around 3,300 rural habitations in Andhra Pradesh.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India has signed two loan agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for construction of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project and Kolkata East West Metro Project
    • Under these agreements, Japan is going to provide Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan of around Rs 5,500 crore as tranche 1 for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project Rs.1619 crore for tranche 3 Kolkata East-West Metro Project .
  • Policy think tank of the Government of India, NITI Aayog has singed Statement of Intent (SoI) with US multinational computer technology corporation Oracle to pilot real drug supply-chain using blockchain distributed ledger and Internet of Things (IoT) software to fight growing problem of counterfeit drugs in India. 
    • Strides Pharma Sciences and Apollo Hospitals will partner in this effort.
