Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The sedition debate"
  • Sedition - language or behaviour that is intended to persuade other people to oppose their government
  • Debate - a discussion in which people or groups state different opinions about a subject
  • Overhaul - to completely change a system in order to make it work more effectively
  • Repeal - to state officially that a law no longer has legal authority and has ended
  • Trenchant - trenchant comments or criticisms are expressed strongly and clearly
  • Criticism - comments that show that you think something is wrong or bad
  • Disaffection - the state of no longer feeling loyal towards a group or organization
  • Disloyalty - not supporting someone that you should support
  • Perhaps - used for saying that you are not certain about something, or that something may or may not be true
  • Penal code - a system of laws dealing with the punishment of crimes
  • Enact - to make a proposal into a law
  • Colonial - relating to a system or period in which one country rules another
  • The statute book - a book containing a list of all the statutes in a state or country
  • Instance - an example of something happening
  • Regime - a system or form of government
  • Invoke - to use a law or rule in order to achieve something
  • Detractor - someone who publicly criticizes someone or something
  • Irony - a strange, funny, or sad situation in which things happen in the opposite way to what you would expect
  • Provision - a part of an agreement or law that deals with a particular problem
  • Extensively - very large in amount or degree
  • Tenaciously - in a way that continues to have an influence for a long time
  • Survive - to continue to exist, especially in a difficult or dangerous situation
  • Successive - coming or happening one after another in a series
  • Altogether - completely
  • Revisit - to consider or discuss something again
  • Pertinent - relevant to something
  • Abolish - to officially get rid of a law, system, practice etc
  • Dilution - the action of making something weaker
  • Rigorous - strict, or severe
  • Foremost - most important or most well known
  • Provision - a part of an agreement or law that deals with a particular problem
  • Innocuous - not likely to offend or upset anyone
  • Voice - to express your opinions or feelings about something, especially negative feelings
  • Disapprobation - disapproval of someone or something that you think is immoral
  • Stinging - very strong, or thorough
  • Depiction - a description of something using words or pictures
  • Unresponsive - not reacting in a suitable way to what people say or do
  • Insensitive - not noticing or caring about other people’s feelings or needs, and not worrying that things that you say or do may upset them
  • Seditious - encouraging people to oppose the government or not obey the law
  • Merely - only / just
  • Overt - used about feelings and opinions that are expressed in a very open way
  • Threaten - to tell someone that you might or you will cause them harm, especially in order to make them do something
  • Incitement - something that encourages people to be violent or commit crimes, or the deliberate act of encouraging violence or crime
  • Enunciate - to express an idea clearly and in detail
  • Mischief - trouble or disagreement that someone deliberately causes
  • Amend - to make changes to a document, law, agreement etc, especially in order to improve it
  • Do away with - to get rid of something

  • Submerge - to go below or make something go below the surface of the sea or a river or lake
  • Emerging - just beginning to exist or be noticed
  • Spotlight - a situation in which you get a lot of public attention
  • Prolonged - continuing for a long time
  • Owing to - because of something
  • Investor - a person who puts money into something in order to make a profit or get an advantage

  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Outflow - a movement of large amounts of money or large numbers of people from one place to another
  • In the doldrums - a situation in which there is a lack of success, activity, or improvement

  • Yield - to produce something useful
  • Easing - the action or process of making something less severe or difficult
  • Normalcy - a situation in which everything is normal
  • Turmoil - a state of excitement or uncontrolled activity
  • Hard-hit - to be very badly affected by something
  • Drastic - a drastic action or change has a very big effect
  • Vis-à-vis - compared to or relating to someone or something
  • Mandate - an official order to do something
  • Scenario -  situation that could possibly happen
