International Current Affairs
  • World Coconut Day is being observed today (2nd September).  
    • This day is being observed on September 2 every year since 2009 to highlight the benefits of coconuts.
    • The day aims at creating awareness about the importance of the coconut and its potential to ward off various diseases and create employment. 
    • This day was started by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) headquartered at Jakarta in Indonesia. 
    • Countries that produce coconuts on a large scale including India are members of APCC. 
    • Theme of World Coconut Day 2018 : 'Coconut for Good Health, Wealth & Wellness'.
  • The 4th BIMSTEC Summit concluded in Kathmandu (Nepal's Capital) with signing and adoption of Kathmandu Declaration by all the 7 BIMSTEC members (India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand). 
    • The 18-point Kathmandu Declaration aims to enhance effectiveness of BIMSTEC Secretariat by engaging it in various technical and economic activities in the region. 
    • It acknowledges importance of trade and investment as one of major contributing factors for fostering economic and social development in the region.
    • It also deplored terrorist attacks in all parts of the world, including in BIMSTEC countries, and strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms.
    • During the summit, foreign ministers of BIMSTEC member countries had also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on establishment of BIMSTEC Grid Interconnection.
    • After conclusion of summit, current chair of BIMSTEC, Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli also handed over Chairmanship of next (fifth) BIMSTEC Summit to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena. 
    • Theme of 4th BIMSTEC Summit 2018 : ‘Towards a Peaceful Prosperous, and Sustainable Bay of Bengal Region’.
  • China-Maldives Friendship Bridge was recently opened for traffic. 
    • It is 1st cross-sea bridge to be built in Maldives. 
    • The 2.2 km long bridge is considered as iconic project of China and Maldives cooperation towards building 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Nepal PM K P Sharma Oli inaugurated 400-bed Nepal-Bharat Maitri Pashupati Dharamshala in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal. 
  • The 6th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Trade Ministers’ Meeting was recently held in Singapore. 
    • Indian delegation was led by Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu.
    • The meeting saw participation of representatives from 10 ASEAN countries and six ASEAN FTA partners namely, India, China, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand. 
National Current Affairs
  • The Haryana government has settled the first claim of ₹9,000 under the public insurance scheme Ayushman Bharat for a baby girl born in Karnal's Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College. 
    • The scheme's first beneficiary Mousami gave birth to Karishma through a caesarean section on August 17 and the claim amount was paid to the treating hospital on August 31.
  • The 7th meeting of National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) of Ministry of AYUSH was held under the chairpersonship of Minister of State for AYUSH, Shripad Yesso Naik at New Delhi
    • The Board meeting considered various Agenda Items placed before it for consideration.
  • The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development had inaugurated a widows’ home titled ‘Krishna Kutir’ at Vrindavan in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. 
    • Krishna Kutir is special home for 1000 widows set under Swadhar Greh scheme and is the largest ever facility of its kind created by government organization. 
    • It was constructed to mitigate the plight of widows living in pathetic condition in Vrindavan.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under Union Ministry of Science and Technology has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with International Energy Agency (IEA) for enhancing innovation for Clean Energy Transition
    • The MoU seeks to deepen co-operation in support of clean energy innovations to accelerate research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of clean energy technologies in India. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), which was launched yesterday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that it will use QR cards instead of debit cards. 
    • Users do not have to remember PIN as transactions are initiated using biometric authentication after scanning the QR code printed on the card. 
    • In case of a lost QR card, the money will be safe in the account as each transaction is authenticated through biometrics.
  • Island nation Mauritius remained the top source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India in 2017-18 followed by Singapore, a recently released data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated. 
  • Indian Information Technology Services corporation Wipro has announced that it has bagged its biggest ever deal of $1.5 billion from US-based Alight Solutions that provides technology-enabled health, wealth, HR and finance solutions. 
    • Under the 10-year deal, Wipro will digitalise and modernise Alight’s core across platforms, technologies and operations. 
  • Germany has announced to provide soft loan of euro 120 million (Rs. 990 crore approximately) to India to strengthen sewage water treatment infrastructure in Uttarakhand in an effort to clean River Ganga under Clean Ganga Mission
    • German development agency GIZ also has prepared ‘Ganga Box’ aimed to target schools-going children and inform them about the river.
New Appointments
  • The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB), Sunil Mehta was elected as new Chairman of Indian Banks Association (IBA) for year 2018-19. 
    • Bank of India’s managing director and chief executive Dina Bandhu Mohapatra was elected as the Deputy chairman
    • Madhav Nair, country head and chief executive, Mashreqbank PSC, was elected as Honorary Secretary.
    • State Bank of India (SBI)’s chairman, Rajnish Kumar, and Federal Bank’s managing director, Shyam Srinivasan, will continue as Deputy Chairmen of IBA.
  • Kerala Government has decided to appoint professional service company KPMG (Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler) as project consultant partner for rebuilding state ravaged by recent massive floods.
    • Beisdes, Tata Project Ltd was entrusted with task of reconstructing roads, buildings and bridges destroyed in rain fury at Pamba, the foothills of famous Lord Ayyappa shrine in Sabarimala.
Books & Authors
  • Congress MP Kapil Sibal will be releasing a new book titled "Shades of Truth : A Journey Derailed".
    • This book is going to be published by New Delhi-based Rupa Publications in September.
Awards & Honors
  • Eminent neurosurgeon Dr B.K. Misra has been named for this year’s prestigious Dr B.C. Roy National Award 2018 as an Eminent Medical Person of the Year.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The 18th Asian Games 2018 ended today in a glittering ceremony in Jakarta (Indonesia).
    • China led the medal table for the tenth consecutive time with a total of 289 medals (132 Gold, 92 Silver and 65 Bronze). 
    • Japan stood at the 2nd place with 205 medals (75 Gold, 56 Silver and 74 Bronze).
    • South Korea is at the 3rd position with 177 medals (49 Gold, 58 Silver and 70 Bronze).
    • The Indian contingent bagged a total of 69 medals (15 Gold, 24 Silver and 30 Bronze), their best-ever medal tally in the history of the event. 
    • Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee, who bagged six gold and two silver medals at the Asian Games 2018, has been named as the quadrennial event's Most Valuable Player.
      • The 18-year-old became the first female athlete to bag the award in the history of Asian Games.
