  • Basin - a large area of land whose surface water all flows into a particular river or lake
  • Litigation - use of the legal system to settle a disagreement
  • Cordial - friendly
  • Augur - to be a sign of what may happen in the future
  • Sustained - continuing at the same level or rate for a long time
  • Constructive - intended to be useful or helpful
  • Concerned - involved in something, or affected by something
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • Tribunal - a special law court organized to judge a particular case
  • Exclude - to deliberately prevent someone or something from being involved in an activity or from entering a place
  • Surplus - more of something than is necessary
  • Forecast - a statement about what is likely to happen, based on available information and usually relating to the weather, business, or the economy
  • Oversee - to watch something in order to check that it works or happens in the way that it should
  • Substantial - large in amount or degree
  • Riparian - relating to people or things that are associated with, inhabiting, or situated on the bank of a river
  • Distress - a feeling that you have when you are very unhappy, worried, or upset
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Determining - to control what something will be
  • Extent - the size and importance of a problem or situation
  • Shortfall - a lack of something that you need or want, or the amount that you lack
  • Pro rata - calculated according to the individual situation
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • Notify - to inform someone officially about something
  • Consonance - agreement
  • Dictum - a short statement, especially one expressing advice or a general truth
  • Conformity - behaviour that is acceptable because it is similar to the behaviour of everyone else
  • Verdict - an official judgment made in a court
  • Threadbare - a threadbare idea or excuse has been used a lot and is no longer effective
  • Contentious - causing disagreement between people or groups
  • Embark on - to start a new project or activity, usually one that will be difficult and will take time
  • Mutually - felt or done by two or more people or groups in the same way
  • Gauntlet - a long, thick glove (= hand covering), worn for protection
  • Undo - to have the effect of changing something back into its original, usually worse state
  • Minority - a small number of people or things that are part of a larger group but different in some way from most of the group
  • War-torn - a war-torn country or place has been badly damaged by a war, especially a war that involves different groups from the same country
  • Dilapidated - a dilapidated building, vehicle, or system is old and in bad condition
  • Apparatus - the people and organizations involved in some aspect of government
  • Victim - someone who has been harmed, injured, or killed as the result of a crime
  • Claim - if war, disease, or an accident claims someone’s life, they die as a result of it
  • Diversity - the fact that very different people or things exist within a group or place
  • Reach out - to try to communicate with a person or a group of people
  • Run-up - to make something very quickly
  • Unilateral - done or decided by one country, group, or person, often without considering what other countries etc think or want
  • Ceasefire - an agreement to stop fighting for a period of time, especially in order to discuss permanent peace
  • Truce - an agreement between two people or groups involved in a war, fight, or disagreement to stop it for a period of time
  • Province - one of many areas into which some countries are divided
  • Assault - a physical attack on someone, or the crime of physically attacking someone
  • Threaten - to tell someone that you might or you will cause them harm, especially in order to make them do something
  • Behead - to cut off someone’s head, especially as a punishment
  • Affiliate - to have a connection with or support a larger organization or group
  • Outpost - a military camp that is far away from the army
  • So-called -  used for showing that you think a word used for describing someone or something is not suitable
  • Caliphate - an Islamic state, especially one ruled by a single religious and political leader
  • Under strain - physical effort or pressure
  • Terrain - an area of land, usually one that has a particular physical feature
  • Turf - an area that one person or group considers to be their own
  • Emphasise - to give particular importance or attention to something
  • Conventional - conventional weapons are guns, bombs etc of the usual type, not nuclear weapons
  • Arsenal  a large collection of weapons and military equipment
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Overstretch - to do more than you are capable of
  • Civil war - a war fought between different groups of people within the same country
  • Territory - an area of land controlled by a particular country, leader, or army
  • Fragile - used about a situation, agreement, or relationship that can easily be damaged or destroyed
  • Stalemate - a situation in which progress is impossible because the people or groups involved cannot agree
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Meanwhile - at the same time
  • Descent - the act of moving down to a lower place or position
  • Chaos - a situation in which everything is confused and in a mess
  • A matter of time - used for saying that something will certainly happen
