International Current Affairs
  • The 6th meeting of BRICS Education Ministers was recently held at Cape Town, South Africa.
    • The Union Minister of State for HRD, Dr Satya Pal Singh represented India in this meeting.
    • During this meet, the BRICS ministers signed a declaration to address 21st century challenges and opportunities regarding the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
    • Theme of the Meeting : “Deepening BRICS Education Partnerships and Exchanges”.
  • India has invited US President Donald Trump to be the Chief Guest for next year's Republic Day parade
    • This comes as India-US ties remain tense over the issues of trade, India's oil imports from Iran and its purchase of S-400 missile systems from Russia. 
    • Note : Ex-US President Barack Obama was the Chief Guest for the 2015 Republic Day parade.
National Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Dharohar Bhawan’ – the new headquarters building of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at 24, Tilak Marg in New Delhi.
    • This new headquarters building is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including energy efficient lighting and rainwater harvesting. 
    • It hosts rare portfolios related to Ajanta, Ellora and many sites of archaeological importance and includes Central Archaeological Library with collection of about 1.5 lakh books and journals. 
  • The Haryana government has announced that the individuals accused of Rape and Molestation will be barred from government services including losing their driving and arms licenses and old-age pension till their trial is completed.
    • Further, the victims in these cases will be provided ₹22,000 if they want to hire a lawyer other than the one provided by the state.
  • The Uttarakhand government has announced that it will make provisions for awarding death penalty to rapists of minor girls
    • Important Note : Currently, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana have approved death penalty for rapists of girls aged upto 12.
  • The 1st Meeting of Sub-Group of Chief Ministers on coordination between MGNREGA and Agriculture was recently held at NITI Aayog today (13 July, 2018).
    • Five critical areas in which MGNREGA could positively help came to the fore in the meeting.They are :
      • Reducing the cost of cultivation, 
      • Enhancing the production through efficient use of water or other inputs, 
      • Providing remunerative price to farmers by incentivizing aggregation and market infrastructure, 
      • Rehabilitation of agricultural land and assets after natural hazards or re-plantation using MGNREGA fund,
      • Bringing diversification in agriculture to help occupational diversification and maximizing profit.
Science & Technology
  • Scientists from New Zealand have performed the first-ever 3-D, colour X-ray on a human body, using the imaging technology developed for the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN physics lab.
    • This new imaging technology will help in providing more information about the tissues and mass surrounding the bones, something that was not possible with traditional X-ray imaging.
Books & Authors
  • Bollywood Actor Sanjay Dutt will come out with his autobiography next year in which he will reveal many interesting stories that he “never had the chance to tell before”. 
    • The memoir will be published by HarperCollins and will be released on his 60th birthday on July 29, 2019.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Reliance Industries Chairman and India's richest person Mukesh Ambani today dethroned Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba's Co-founder Jack Ma to become Asia's richest person as RIL shares hit an all-time high. 
    • Note : Ambani's net worth now stands at $44.3 billion as compared to Jack Ma's $44 billion wealth.
  • Consumer or Retail Inflation accelerated to 5% to hit a five-month high in June this year, well above May's 4.87%, majorly due to rise in the fuel prices. 
    • Note : This is the eighth straight month that consumer inflation has remained above the Reserve Bank of India's 4% target. 
  • Union Finance Ministry has hiked Threshold Monetary Limit for tax departments to file appeals in tax cases. 
    • The move is aimed at significantly decreasing taxpayer greivances and litigation burden of tax departments in courts and tribunals across the country.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Indian Army has singed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with State bank of India (SBI) on Defence Salary Package
    • It is revised version of first MoU between SBI and Indian Army signed in 2011 and was renewed again in February 2015 to add suited requirements of serving soldiers, pensioners and families.
    • Note : Currently the Indian Army has MoUs on Defence Salary Package with 11 public and private sector banks, which are considered for inception and renewal with banks on analyzing their utility and suitability to requirements of serving soldiers, pensioners and families.
  • India is going to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh to ease visa restrictions for citizens from the neighboring country.
    • The MOU on revised travel arrangements will be signed during Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s three-day visit to Dhaka.
Deaths
  • Veteran Journalist J N Sadhu (94) passed away following a long term illness in Shimla.
    • He worked with The Indian Express for around 35 years. 
    • He was working as a free lance journalist after his retirement.
  • Kalpesh Yagnik (55), the Group Editor of media house Dainik Bhaskar passed away today.
    • He had joined the Dainik Bhaskar group in 1998, after working at the Free Press Journal. 
  • Dada JP Vaswani (99), spiritual leader and head of the Sadhu Vaswani Mission, passed away in Pune.
    • He is known for promoting vegetarianism.
New Appointments
  • Former careered diplomat Dr. TCA Raghavan was appointed as the Director General (DG) of Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA).
    • Note : The post of DG is equivalent to the rank of Secretary to Government of India. 
  • Dr. Sandeep Sancheti, Vice Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) has assumed charge as the 97th President of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
    • Founded in 1925 and initially known as the Inter-University Board of India, the AIU has currently more than 720 members represented by Vice Chancellors.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian sprinter Hima Das won the women's 400m event at the IAAF World Junior Championships today.
    • With this, she the first-ever Indian to clinch track gold in a world championship across all age groups.
  • Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar, who has mentored Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik and Shreyas Iyer among others, has been named as KKR Academy's Lead Coach and Mentor
    • Note : The KKR Academy has been launched to provide off-season training facilities and coaching to the players in the squad.
