  • Today is Independence Day of The Bahamas.

  • The leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea today signed a declaration to fully implement a peace deal reached in 2000, ending the 20-year war between the two countries. 
    • Both the nations also agreed to re-establish trade and diplomatic ties. 
    • Note : Eritrea seceded from Ethiopia in 1993, and the two countries fought a border war from 1998 to 2000.
National Current Affairs
  • Gujarat Government has granted religious minority status to Jews living in the state. 
    • Important Note : With this, Gujarat becomes the third state in India to grant religious minority status to Jews after West Bengal and Maharashtra.
  • The central government is planning to launch 7 Greenfield projects to construct 3,000km of expressways under the Rs.5.35 trillion Bharatmala scheme.
    • In the first phase, the road network is set to connect Delhi-Vadodara, Chennai-Salem in Tamil Nadu, Kharagpur-Siliguri in West Bengal, Delhi-Bilaspur, Durg-Aurang in Chhattisgarh, Mangaluru-Chitradurga in Karnataka and Ambala-Kathputli in Haryana.
    • The longest stretch of 1,000km will be built between Delhi and Vadodara.
  • The Government has shortlisted Six Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) including 3 from Public Sector and 3 from Private Sector.
    • It is expected that these Institutions will come up in top 500 of the world ranking in 10 years and in top 100 of the world ranking eventually overtime.

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has launched Saathi, a mobile help centre to reach out to people undertaking annual pilgrimage to 3,880-metre high holy cave shrine of Amarnath. 
    • Saathi will provide help and information to yatris staying in camps outside the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu.
  • The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has announced that over 51 lakh houses have been approved under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) in the three years of its implementation. 
    • Out of 51 lakh sanctioned houses, over 28 lakhs houses are already in various stages of construction. 
    • Over 8 lakh houses have already been completed.

  • Michael Ondaatje’s bestselling novel 'The English Patient' was announced as the winner of the Golden Man Booker Prize at the Southbank Centre in London.
    • The prize was instituted as part of celebrations to mark the Booker’s having completed 50 years.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that the license of Alwar Urban Co-operative Bank in Alwar, Rajasthan has been cancelled as it is not in a position to pay its depositors in full as and when their claims accrue, among other reasons.
  • South Korean multinational conglomerate Samsung opened the world's largest mobile phone manufacturing factory in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
    • The facility, inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, is spread over 35 acres in Noida's Sector 81. 
    • Built at a cost of ₹5,000 crore, the facility can produce 12 crore mobile phones every year.
  • The Department of Telecommunications has approved merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular that will create India's largest telecom operator
    • However, both companies will have to meet certain conditions for final approval.
    • The department has reportedly asked Idea to pay ₹3,926 crore in cash for Vodafone's spectrum and furnish a bank guarantee of ₹3,342 crore.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved Lining Project of Son canal in Shahabad-Bhojpur region of Bihar. 
    • The estimated cost of this project is US $503 million (Rs 3272.49 crore) out of which US $352 million is being provided by ADB.
    • This project on completion will bring immense benefits to agriculture sector of Shahabad – Bhojpur region of Bihar. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and South Korea Sign 5 MoUs in the fields of Science & Technology.
    • Three MoUs are for Programme of Cooperation 2018-21, Establishment of Future Strategy Group, and Cooperation in Biotechnology and Bio-economy.
    • Two other MoUs were signed between Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and South Korean National Research Council for Science and Technology and IIT Mumbai and Korea Institute of Science and Technology, to further accelerate future-oriented cooperation in their respective sectors.
Science & Technology
  • China successfully launched two remote sensing satellites PRSS-1 and PakTes-1A of Pakistan on board of Long March-2C rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre. 
    • It was overall 279th mission for the Long March rocket series (mainly used to send satellites into low Earth or Sun-synchronous orbits) and first international commercial launch in nearly two decades after it carried Motorola’s Iridium satellites into orbit in 1999.
New Appointments
  • British Prime Minister Theresa May today appointed Jeremy Hunt as Foreign Secretary after Boris Johnson resigned in protest at the government's Brexit plan. 
  • UK Minister of State for Housing and Planning Dominic Raab has been appointed as the Brexit Secretary.
  • Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz today announced the appointment of Martin Schwenk as the new MD and CEO for Mercedes-Benz India with effect from November 1. 
    • He will replace Roland Folger, who will assume a new position for Mercedes-Benz's Thailand and Vietnam markets.
