International Current Affairs
  • Malabar 2018, a trilateral naval exercise involving the United States, Japan and India began off the coast of Guam in the Phillipine Sea. 
    • This was the 22nd edition of the exercise and the first time to be held in United States territory. 
    • Naval ships, aircraft and personnel from three countries will practice surface and anti-submarine warfare operations and combined carrier strike group operations off the coast of Guam island in the western Pacific.
    • The exercise is divided into two phases.
      • Harbor phase
      • Sea phase
    • This is the 1st joint exercise after the US renamed its Hawaii-based Pacific command as the Indo-Pacific Command. 
    • Note : The Indian Navy was represented by stealth frigate INS Sahyadri; AsW corvette INS Kamorta and fleet tanker INS Shakti and a Poseidon P-8I aircraft.
  • In the wake of recent celebrity suicides, the New York's Governor Andrew Cuomo has launched a suicide prevention programme titled, Attempted Suicide Short Intervention Program (ASSIP)
    • This program reframes how suicide attempts are examined in order to develop individualized prevention strategies, reports Xinhua news agency.
National Current Affairs
  • The Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (Varanasi) will become India's first airport to have an Automated Smart Facial Recognition System at its entry, security and boarding points. 
    • The initiative, which is part of the DigiYatra scheme, will ensure quicker entry into airports by facilitating automated check-ins.
  • According to a recent report by the Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation, the Rural sanitation coverage of India has risen to 85% under Swachh Bharat Mission
Science & Technology
  • The United States has unveiled the world's most powerful supercomputer titled 'Summit', beating the previous record-holder China's Sunway TaihuLight
    • With a peak performance of 200,000 trillion calculations per second, 'Summit' is over twice as fast as Sunway TaihuLight, which is capable of 93,000 trillion calculations per second. 
  • India's 1st indigenous, long-range artillery gun 'Dhanush' has cleared its final test at Pokhran, Rajasthan and is ready to be inducted into the Indian Army.
  • The Dutch city of Eindhoven is set to be the 1st in the world to have habitable houses made by a 3D printer.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made changes in the Gold Monetisation Scheme (GMS) 2015 to enable people to open a hassle-free gold deposit account.
  • The Foreign direct investment (FDI) in India increased to US $61.96 billion in 2017-18.
    • The main sectors that received Maximum FDI were services, computer software and hardware, telecommunications, construction, trading and automobile
    • Major sources of FDI to India included Mauritius, Singapore, Japan, Netherlands, US, Germany, France and UAE.
    • This was revealed by the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP).
Recent Committees in News
  • Finance Minister Piyush Goyal has announced setting up of a committee on the formation of  Asset Reconstruction Company for faster resolution of stressed accounts of public sector banks. 
    • The committee will give it's recommendations in two weeks. 
    • Head of this committee : Sunil Mehta (Non-executive chairman of PNB)

  • Retail major Shoppers Stop has appointed Rajiv Suri as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) with immediate effect.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Indian women's cricket team qualified for the record 7th Women's Asia Cup final by defeating Pakistan by seven wickets.
  • American professional basketball team Golden State Warriors lifted NBA Finals 2018 by defeating Cleveland Cavaliers.
    • This is their 3rd NBA title in four years and their 2nd title in a row.
  • Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar has deferred the government notification which directed sportspersons employed with the state to pay 33% of their income to the sports council.
  • In a major step for the welfare of Sportspersons, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore has approved the upward revision of pension to meritorious Sports persons.
    • The medal winners at the Olympic and Para-Olympic Games will now get 20 thousand rupees as pension.
    • The Gold medallist at World Cup and World Championship will be given 16 thousand rupees while Silver and Bronze medallist will get 14 thousand rupees.
    • The Gold medallist in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Para Asian Games will be given 14 thousand rupees while the Silver and Bronze medallist will get 12 thousand rupees as pension.
