International Current Affairs
  • Today (5th June 2018) is World Environment Day.
    • This day is observed to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth.
    • This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in the year 1972 on the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. 
    • This year’s host country : India
    • Theme for the World Environment Day 2018 : Beat Plastic Pollution’.
  • Singapore today unveiled a 'World Peace' medallion to commemorate the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un
    • Note : The meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un will be the first ever between a sitting US President and a North Korean leader.
  • Saudi Arabia began issuing its first driver's licences to women ahead of lifting the ban on women driving on June 24.
  • Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is going to visit North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
    • With this, he will become the first head of state to meet Jong-un in North Korea since he came to power in 2011. 
National Current Affairs
  • On the World Environment Day today, Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that the state would ban the use of plastic from 2019
    • Note : Milk and oil pouches, along with other basic need items will be exempted from the ban.
  • Ahead of the World Environment Day, the Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has banned single-use water bottles in all government offices in the state and ordered the use of only multi-use water bottles. 
    • The CM has announced that a five-point programme would be implemented for maintaining ecological balance in Haryana, including plantation of 20 lakh saplings and using LED bulbs.
  • Uttar Pradesh's Mughal Sarai Junction has officially been renamed as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the state government's proposal. 
  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur flagged off a helicopter taxi service that will reduce the travel time between Shimla and Chandigarh to 20 minutes, against the nearly 3.5 hours by road. 
    • This service, operated by Pawan Hans, can accommodate 19 persons on each sortie and will charge ₹2,999 per person.
  • The 2-day Conference of Governors and Lt. Governors commenced at Rashtrapati Bhavan with the inaugural address of President Ram Nath Kovind. 
    • This is the 49th such Conference held in Rashtrapati Bhavan and the second Conference presided over by President Ram Nath Kovind.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The government has announced a comprehensive package of more than ₹8,000 crore to provide relief to sugarcane farmers and to clear their dues, which have crossed over ₹22,000 crore. 
    • The interventions include increase in custom duty on import of sugar, removal of custom duty on export of sugar, and the creation of buffer stock at the cost of ₹1,200 crore.

  • India’s Sanjana Ramesh was awarded the ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) Award and Vaishnavi Yadav won the ‘Girls Grit Award’ at the 10th Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Asia Camp.
Science & Technology
  • Researchers at IISc Bangalore have developed a 'LifeBox' that can extend the preservation time of organs, specifically the heart, and allows for increased travel time and distances.
New Appointments
  • Social entrepreneur Vijay Mahajan has been appointed as the Secretary & CEO of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation & the Director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Thai professional golfer Ariya Jutanugarn won the 73rd US Women’s Open at the Shoal Creek Alabama course, United States. 
    • With this, she has become the first player from Thailand to win the title.
  • World number one Rafael Nadal defeated Germany's Maximilian Marterer in straight sets to register his 900th career win and enter the French Open quarter-finals for the 12th time. 
    • Note : Nadal is only the second active and fifth male player overall to register 900 wins in the Open Era.
