International Current Affairs
  • Today (2nd June) is International Sex Workers Day.
    • This day honours sex workers and recognises their often exploited working conditions. 
  • According to the Save The Children’s End of Childhood Index 2018, India has been ranked at 113 among 175 countries in the world.
    • Singapore tops the index followed by Slovenia and Niger is ranked the last at 175.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Singapore's former premier Goh Chok Tong, unveiled a plaque dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi at Clifford Pier in the city-state, where his ashes were immersed. 
  • US President Donald Trump, after meeting with a senior envoy from North Korea, has announced the planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is back on for June 12 in Singapore. 
    • Note : Earlier, Trump had cancelled the summit, citing North Korea's "anger and hostility".
  • China has announced that a delegation of troops from the People's Liberation Army will be visiting India this year for the first time since the 73-day standoff at Doklam. 
    • Note : The two countries had suspended military exercises after the standoff and recently agreed to resume military relations when PM Narendra Modi visited Wuhan for an informal summit with President Xi Jinping.

  • The state of Telangana is celebrating the 4th anniversary of its foundation
    • Telangana is 29th state of India, which came into being on June 2nd 2014, after Andhra Pradesh was split into two states — Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

  • Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi laid the foundation stone for India's first Advanced DNA Forensic Lab in Chandigarh.
    • Built at a cost of Rs 99.76 crore from the Nirbhaya Fund, the state-of-the-art 'Sakhi Suraksha' lab, will come up at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory campus to assist in investigation and prosecution of crimes including those committed against women and children.
  • Centre has approved construction of one lakh fifty thousand houses for urban poor under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
    • The latest approval entails an investment of 7,227 crore rupees with central assistance of 2,209 crore rupees.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Home Minister Rajnath Singh on 1st June launched an Online Analytical Tool to facilitate closer monitoring of the flow and utilisation of foreign contributions received by various organisations registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
    • The web-based tool enables decision-makers in various Departments of Government to scrutinise source of foreign funds and their actual use in India. 
    • It gives Home Ministry, the capacity to take data-driven and evidence-based decisions regarding the compliance of the provisions of the FCRA, 2010.
Deaths
  • Timothy Pereira (75), former football international passed away. 
    • He represented the Tata Football Club. 
    • He first played for Goan sports & State Bank. 
Science & Technology
  • US Food and Drug Administration has approved the 1st Prosthetic Iris (coloured part of the eye) that can be implanted to treat patients with missing or damaged iris . 
Awards & Honors
  • During his visit to Singapore, PM Narendra Modi felicitated former Singaporean diplomat Tommy Koh with a Padma Shri award (India's fourth highest civilian award). 
    • Note : Koh is one of the 10 ASEAN members whom the government decided to felicitate this year on the silver jubilee of India-ASEAN partnership.
  • An orchid has been named as 'Dendrobium Narendra Modi' as a special gesture for PM Modi during his visit to Singapore today. 
    • The strong and robust tropical orchid can produce upright inflorescence up to 38 cm long with 14-20 well-arranged flowers.
New Appointments
  • Giuseppe Conte has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Italy
    • He has replaced Paolo Gentiloni, the founding member of the Democratic Party. 
  • US-based cybersecurity company Palo Alto Networks has appointed Nikesh Arora as its new Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors. 
    • Note : Arora has served Japanese conglomerate SoftBank as President and technology giant Google as its Chief Business Officer in the past. 
  • IAS officer Amit Khare assumed charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on superannuation of Narendra Kumar Sinha.
  • Indian Super League (ISL) club FC Pune City appointed Brazilian Marcos Paqueta as their head coach. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to ordinance to set up the India’s first national sports university in Imphal.
  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) included Nepal, Netherlands, Scotland and the UAE in their ODI rankings list apart from the 12 existing countries.
    • The Netherlands secured ODI status and a place in the 13-team ODI league by winning the ICC World Cricket League Championship last year, while Scotland, Nepal and the UAE earned ODI status by finishing as the three leading associates (along with the Dutch) in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018.
