International Current Affairs
  • A business delegation from Pakistan will visit India on June 30 to participate in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Development Fund Partnership Conclave 2018.
    • The three-day conclave will commence from July 1 and is aimed at strategic growth in the South Asia region through project collaboration and regional integration. 
  • For the first time, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are going to hold a bilateral summit at Helsinki (Finland's capital) on 16th July 2018. 
    • The two leaders will discuss the current global scenario as well as international issues, the Kremlin said.
    • Due to this bilateral summit, the US has postponed its inaugural 2+2 dialogue with India which was scheduled to be held on July 6, 2018 in Washington DC.
  • The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) at its plenary meeting in Paris, France has officially placed Pakistan on its Grey List of countries involved in providing monetary assistance to terrorism and related causes for failing to curb terror financing on its soil.  
    • Note : The placement on to grey list could hurt Pakistan’s economy as well as its international standing.
National Current Affairs
  • Today (29th June) is National Statistics Day.
    • This day is organised by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
    • This day commemorates the birth anniversary of Indian Bengali scientist and applied statistician, Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.
      • He is best remembered for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure.
    • Theme of National Statistics Day 2018 : ‘Quality Assurance in Official Statistics’.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind launched Solar Charkha Mission under which Government will disburse subsidy of Rs 550 crore to thousands of artisans, generating employment in rural areas. 
    • Under this mission, Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) will cover 50 clusters across the country including in the Northeast and each cluster will employ 400 to 2,000 artisans. 
    • Aim of Solar Charkha Mission : To generate employment in rural areas and contribute to the green economy. 
  • To trace missing and abandoned children in India, the Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu today launched a mobile application titled ReUnite.
    • The app is multiuser where parents and citizens can upload pictures of children, and provide detailed description like name, birth mark, address, report to the police station, search and identify missing kids. 
    • Amazon Rekognition, web facial recognition service, is being used to identify missing kids.
  • Madhya Pradesh will be awarded under Prime Minister's Safe Motherhood Campaign for reducing maternal mortality.  
    • Madhya Pradesh has been registered an unprecedented 48-digit decline in maternal deaths as per the report of the Registrar General of India from 2014 to 2016.
    • Note : The Prime Minister’s Safe Motherhood Campaign has been launched to ensure quality care of over 3 crore pregnant women of the country before delivery.
Awards & Honors
  • The Ministry of Shipping’s flagship programme for port-led-prosperity ‘Sagarmala’ received the ‘Gold Award’ in infrastructure sector in the recently concluded 52nd Skoch Summit 2018 in New Delhi, recognizing the programmes’s contribution to India’s socio-economic transformation and it's role in propelling fast-track growth and infrastructure development. 
    • The Sagarmala Programme also received the ‘Order of Merit’ at the Summit. 
  • The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved institution of Home Minister’s Special Operation Medal, Antarik Suraksha Medal, Asadharan Aashuchan Padak, and Utkrisht & Ati-Utkrisht Seva Medals.
  • Home Minister’s Special Operation Medal
    • Will be Awarded on : 15th August
    • Will be Given to : Police Officers of States/UTs, Central Police Organisations (CPOs), Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Security Organisation involved in Special Operations are eligible for it.
  • Asadharan Aashuchan Padak
    • Will be Awarded on : 15th August
    • Will be Given to : Officials of Intelligence organization of Central Government and Intelligence Department/wings/Special Branches/Units of all State/UT Police, CAPFs, Assam Rifles (AR) and National Security Guard (NSG) for acts of exceptional courage and skill in intelligence gathering.
  • Antarik Suraksha Medal
    • Will be Awarded on : 26th January
    • Will be Given to : Police personnel of States/UTs/CAPFs/Security Organisation in recognition of operation duty rendered by them for tenure of every two years in internal security in Jammu & Kashmir, Left Wing Extremism (LWE) region and North East region.
  • Utkrisht and Ati Utkrisht Seva Medal :
    • Will be Awarded on : 26th January
    • Will be Given to : Permanent Police personnel and other permanent support staff working in CAPFs, State/UTs Police Forces, AR, NSG, Home Guard (HG) and intelligence organizations of Central and state Governments and CAPFs in recognition of Long Service of 15 and 25 year and good service records.
Books & Authors
  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu has launched a book titled “Human Rights, Values and Cultural Ethos”. 
    • This book is a collection of essays and lectures written by Dr. R.P. Dhokalia
    • The thrust of the book is on the connection between human rights and the intrinsic and core human values which in turn manifest in the cultural ethos of a society.
MOUs & Agreements
  • NITI Aayog’s Women Entrepreneurs Platform (WEP) has signed five separate Statement of Intent (SoIs) with Financial Institutions & Social Organisations to create opportunities and support women entrepreneurs. 
    • The 5 organisations are :
      • Shri Mahila Sewa Sahakari Bank Limited,
      • Indiabulls Housing Finance Limited, 
      • SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited, 
      • Sreemanta Sankar Mission,
      • Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India is looking at cutting oil imports from Iran, and replacing them with more purchases from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
    • This comes after the US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley asked PM Narendra Modi to reduce India's dependence on Iran. 
    • Note : Recently, the US reimposed sanctions against Iran after it withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal.
  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu released a commemorative coin of Rs 125 and circulation coin of Rs 5 denomination on the occasion of Statistics Day and 125th birth anniversary of P C Mahalanobis today.
  • India was ranked 35th among 100 countries in recently released Global Real Estate Transparency Index (GRETI) 2018.

New Appointments
  • ICICI Bank today appointed retired IAS officer and former petroleum secretary Girish Chandra Chaturvedi as part-time non-executive Chairman and independent Director on the bank's Board.
    • He will replace current Chairman MK Sharma after his term ends on June 30.
  • Dedar Singh Gill, a prominent Indian-origin intellectual property lawyer has been appointed as a judicial commissioner of Singapore’s Supreme Court.
  • Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has joined forces with UNESCO to promote a safe and secure cyber environment for youngsters to ensure they are not targeted for bullying, abuse, exploitation and more through the internet. 
  • Daikin Industries Ltd has appointed its India operations MD & CEO Kanwaljeet Jawa into the board of the parent company. 
    • Kanwaljeet Jawa will be the first Indian on the Daikin Industries board. 
  • 1984-batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer Anoop Kumar Pandey would replace Rajiv Kumar as the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh.
