  • Tainted - something that is tainted is spoilt by an unpleasant feature or quality that often makes people not want to be involved with it
  • Contamination - the process of making something dirty, polluted, or poisonous by adding a chemical, waste, or infection
  • Probe - to try to find out the truth about something
  • Monitor - to regularly check something or watch someone in order to find out what is happening
  • Norms - standards of behaviour that are accepted in a particular society
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Accumulate - to get more and more of something over a period of time
  • Radioactive - a radioactive substance contains a very harmful form of energy that is produced during nuclear reactions
  • Chronic - very bad
  • Cluster - a small group of people or things that are very close to each other
  • Epidemiologist - people who study infectious diseases and their causes
  • Terrain - an area of land, usually one that has a particular physical feature
  • Alluvial - made of earth and sand left by rivers or floods
  • Trigger - to make something happen
  • Hypotheses - an idea that attempts to explain something but has not yet been tested or proved to be correct

  • Aquifer - a layer of earth or rock that contains water or that water can pass through
  • Arsenic - a chemical element that is a brittle grey semimetal
  • Sediment - a layer of a substance that forms at the bottom of a liquid

  • Uncover - to find out about something that has been hidden or kept secret

  • Ally - someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you
  • Accommodate - to provide enough space for something or someone

  • Constituency - the voters in a division of a country who elect a representative to parliament

  • Possibility - the chance that something might happen or be true

  • Credibility - qualities that someone has that make people believe or trust them
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Opportunism - the actions of someone who takes every opportunity to gain an advantage and is willing to behave in an unfair way
  • Idealistic - believing very firmly in something which is good but probably impossible to achieve
  • Isolate - feeling alone and unhappy, with no friends to support you
  • Fancy - to want to have or do something
  • Tactic - a particular method or plan for achieving something
  • Break away - to escape from a person, place, or situation
  • Spectacular - extremely impressive
  • Ascendant - in the process of gaining power or influence over another person, group etc
  • Comeback - a period when someone or something becomes successful or popular again
  • Manoeuvre - an action or movement that you need care or skill to do
  • Primacy - the fact of being more powerful or important than anything else
  • Downplay - to deliberately make a situation seem less serious or important than it is
  • Trump - to beat someone or something by doing or producing something better
  • Spontaneous - happening in a natural way without being planned or thought about
