International Current Affairs
  • The inaugural India, United States 2+2 Dialogue will be held on 6th July 2018 in Washington. DC.
    • US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo and Secretary of Defense James Mattis will host External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
    • This dialogue will focus on strengthening strategic, security, and defence cooperation as both countries jointly confront global challenges.
  • The number of hungry people in the world has risen for the first time in more than a decade, according to a recently released UN’s Sustainable Development Goals report 2018.
    • According to this report, there are now approximately 38 million more undernourished people in the world.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj held talks with the President of European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani in Brussels on the last leg of her four-nation tour.
National Current Affairs
  • The Uttarakhand High Court has banned water sports in the state until the government frames a policy to regulate them. 
    • Adding that sports like river rafting are "serious", the court observed, "Sports for pleasure cannot be permitted to end in disaster."
    • It also expressed concern over environmental damages, remarking that the state is not maintaining the sanctity of river Ganga.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has banned Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP) under anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967
    • AQIS is an affiliate of al Qaeda and ISKP is Afghanistan wing of Islamic State (IS).
    • Note : UAPA is anti-terrorist law aimed at effective prevention of unlawful activities associations in India. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India has announced it plans to make the Chabahar port operational by 2019, even as the US reimposed sanctions on Iran after withdrawing itself from the nuclear deal. 
    • Chabahar port is a seaport in Chabahar located in southeastern Iran, on the Gulf of Oman. 
    • It serves as Iran's only oceanic port, and consists of two separate ports named Shahid Kalantari and Shahid Beheshti, each of which has five berths
    • The port is aimed at opening a trade route to Afghanistan and central Asia by bypassing Pakistan.
  • India has raised import duties on almost 30 items including agricultural and steel products in protest against the US imposing higher levies on products shipped from the country. 
    • Earlier, US hiked tariffs on certain steel and aluminium products which had tariff implication of $241 million on India. 
    • Note : China, EU and other trading partners have also hiked tariffs in protest.
  • Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar’s consumer goods venture Sri Sri Tattva has launched an in-house apparel brand – BYOGI.
    • Banking on the hype related to yoga, BYOGI will have ranges of ethnic wears, yoga wears and yoga accessories like mats.
Deaths
  • Koko, a 46-year-old gorilla who mastered sign language has died today. 
  • Renowned mimicry and ventriloquism artist Nerella Venumadhav (85) passed away.
    • Hailed as the pioneer and maestro of mimicry, Mr Venumadhav was the first Indian mimicry and ventriloquism artist to have performed at the UN headquarters.
  • Veteran Pakistani diplomat Jamsheed Marker (95) passed away,
    • Marker served as Pakistan’s ambassador continually for 30 years, earning him the title of ‘ambassador to more countries than any other person’ in the Guinness Book of Records.
  • Renowned humourist, satirist Mushtaq Ahmed Yousufi (94) passes away.
    • Some of his most popular works include Chiragh Talay, Khakam-ba-dahan, Zarguzasht, Aab-E-gum and Sham-e-Shair-e-Yaaraan.
New Appointments
  • The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) today named Bharti Enterprises’ chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal as honorary chairman after his two-year long tenure as the chairman comes to an end.
    • Mittal is being replaced by Unilever Chief Executive Paul Polman as the Chairman.
  • B V R Subrahmanyam, a senior IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, was appointed as the Chief secretary of Jammu and Kashmir
Awards & Honors
  • Syrian child activist Bana Alabed who live-tweeted her experiences in war-torn Syria will be honoured by US-based think tank Atlantic Council, with Freedom Award for "defending freedom". 
    • Note : Alabed also featured on the TIME magazine's list of 25 Most Influential People on the Internet in 2017.
  • The Commonwealth Games 2018 gold-medal winning shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, was adjudged as the Sportsperson of the Year for 2017 by the Sports Illustrated India magazine today.
